About Derek
I am an experienced tutor currently working in Vancouver public schools. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, an MBA from Sorbonne University in France, and a Master's degree in Social Work (Education-focused) from The University of Hong Kong (QS World University Rankings #11).
With over six years of experience(in Hong Kong and Canada), I support a wide range of learners, including students who struggle with mathematics, students with learning differences such as dyslexia and math-related learning difficulties (e.g. dyscalculia), as well as students with special educational needs including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I also work with gifted students who benefit from individualized and structured instruction.
I enjoy making mathematics meaningful and accessible by connecting concepts to everyday life. I frequently use diagrams, visual models, and step-by-step illustrations to help students better understand abstract ideas. This visual and concrete approach is especially effective for students who learn best through seeing and doing.
I am a Hong Kong–registered social worker and speak English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. My teaching style is patient, structured, and supportive, with a strong focus on building confidence, understanding, and long-term learning skills.

My teaching approach and experience
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, an MBA from Sorbonne University in France, and a Master's degree in Social Work (Education-focused) from The University of Hong Kong (QS World University Rankings #11). I am a Hong Kong–registered social worker with over six years of experience supporting children and adolescents.
I currently work in Vancouver public schools and tutor BC students in Grades 5–12, including Grade 11–12 Pre-Calculus. My teaching approach is structured, student-centered, and informed by a strong understanding of student psychology and behavior.
I have extensive experience supporting students with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and gifted learning profiles. Lessons are tailored to each student's cognitive and emotional needs, with clear explanations, step-by-step guidance, and consistent routines.
I also provide English academic support for newcomer students and offer trilingual communication in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
