About Natasha
My name is Tasha and I am a Biologist. Saying that never gets old to me, indeed, I regard it as a privilege. I am a member of the Royal Society of Biology and my degree is in cancer biology, though I have vocational general science qualifications that I find most helpful in my role as a technician. I have worked in this role in a range of settings, from university to the medical device industry and secondary education. I am currently a science technician in a secondary school, where I am now based in the biology department, and I have been with this school for 5 years now. I work closely with teachers to develop and deliver practical science lessons and supporting materials such as models and classroom displays, to complement the curriculum, to give it added context, and to aide deeper, richer understanding of course content. I am also part of a small team that offer STEM extra curricular activities to compliment the curriculum. Next year's big projects for me are the continued development of the school wild garden and vegetable plot, and the project "How Things Grow in Space", inspired by the research on the ISS, that has seen them grow some of their own food crops.
I choose the role of technician over the role of teacher, simply because the role is so much fun, but also because I believe technicians are important teachers and scientist role models. I was lucky to have great technicians as teachers throughout my formative years studying science, through A level equivalents and my degree and beyond. I love bench science first and foremost, I learned early in my education that I am happiest at the bench. I also love science communication, talking about it, sharing knowledge and enthusing. In my role as science technician I get the best of both worlds. I have all the fun of the bench work, I have class work and interaction with excited students who want me to communicate my knowledge and skills with them, and I also get to find creative ways to present abstract ideas that can't be presented with simple practical work, for example building a kidney model with enlarged detail of a loop of henle and the blood vessels around it (you can't see it during dissection, as these structures are microscopic). Or planning a compost heap and worm bed to teach the carbon and nitrogen cycle, so that the students can actually participate and contribute to the cycles. Having students experience the same awe that I feel for a cool science experiment is very satisfying to me. I try to bring that awe and inspiration to my online lessons, because I believe it is my most powerful tool in communicating science that sticks in the minds of students.

I offer general online subject tuition, curriculum revision and practical work revision. My aim is to help students gain confidence in their skills and abilities, and build a love of science. I cover key stage 3 to 4 in all 3 science subjects, and biology up to key stage 5. I have been tutoring for 2 years, and I currently have 2 students, 1 at KS3 and 1 at KS4. I teach using platforms such as Seneca and SaveMyExams which both have test and exam practice features, I also utilise resources such as twinkl, PhET (modelling) and YouTube for videos. I provide all students with access to a science glossary with a dictionary of pertinent words, definitions and equations, and a list of resource links for your own reference. My lessons are interactive, and student participation is very much encouraged to keep learning active.
