About Thomas

Hello!

My name is Thomas, and I am a 2022 graduate of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where I earned my MA degree with a 4.0 GPA studying history and international relations.

I am a patient and respectful teacher who is confident in my ability to engage students and help acheive their academic goals. I have experience teaching writing skills through university tutoring and was an editor for a university publication, and am therefore able to assist students in essay writing, outlining, and test taking skills. I acheived a score of 5 on my AP History and English exams, and a "34" composite score on the ACT, with "36" in the English/Reading sections.

A Chicago native, I am currently doing a year-long legal fellowship with the Circuit Court of Cook County as I prepare for law school next year. In the mean time, I am looking to engage with my passions for history, english, and learning by tutoring students taking AP and prep level high school courses in history and english. Though I am based in Chicago, I am welcome to students from anywhere in the world remotely.

About the lesson

I plan to engage the student and help them meet their goals through the following means:

-Initial Assessment: Start with an assessment to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses.

-Set Goals: Establish clear, achievable goals for the tutoring sessions based on the assessment.

2. Structured Lesson Plans

-Curriculum Alignment: Align your lesson plans with the AP curriculum.

-Weekly Topics: Break down the syllabus into weekly topics to cover specific periods, themes, or conc
epts.

3. Interactive and Engaging Teaching Methods

-Socratic Method: Engage students in discussions to develop critical thinking.

-Primary Sources: Use primary sources for analysis to help students understand historical context.

-Multimedia Resources: Incorporate videos, documentaries, and online resources to make lessons more engaging.

4. Develop Analytical Skills

-DBQs (Document-Based Questions): Practice DBQs to help students analyze and synthesize historical data.

-Essay Writing: Focus on essay-writing skills, including thesis development, argumentation, and evidence use.

5. Motivation and Support

-Positive Reinforcement: Encourage and motivate students by celebrating their successes.

-Supportive Environment: Create a supportive and patient learning environment.
