About Lorenzo

I am currently teaching in an IB school in South London, I have QTS and a master in Education at the Royal College of Art, having graduated from an MSc in theoretical physics last year and a BSc in mathematics before that.
I fell in love with mathematics through my grandfather who had very much the same approach as the one I have been using these last few years.

Many tutors require motivation from the students they're tutoring, I believe that the way mathematics is currently taught in most schools puts a hamper to that: memory is often used instead of insight (remember that formula, apply it 100 times) and this makes the learning process more cumbersome and longer than it needs to be. In no other field is the power of metaphor and intuition as powerful as in mathematics.

In my time at Imperial College I had to go above and beyond that wall multiple times, both as a student and as a teaching assistant. This led me to win multiple departmental awards for projects where the clarity of exposition was the main focus.
Using that same approach with A-levels and GCSE level mathematics I had a lot of success with many of my current students.

I am easygoing, patient and will not be overly serious all the time, I believe it's the best environment for someone to learn. Besides mathematics and physics I love playing chess, I am fascinated by languages and philosophy, I've competed in sports at the highest collegiate level and I enjoy composing music.

That is why I pride myself in being able to relate to people from a variety of backgrounds, something I also take to be a requirement for effective teaching.

About the lesson

The lessons would last 1h but I would prioritise making sure that a concept is well understood and risking staying 10 more minutes rather than leaving after 60 minutes have passed.

The way it would work most of the time is using the homework as a basis for the conversation, all the while completing them.

Since the problem I was describing above is something in common with all levels of mathematics below university, I would be glad to teach primary school tutees as much as I would A levels ones. It's also important to note that I am comfortable speaking 3 languages: italian, french and naturally english.

The rate is fixed regardless of the age of the tutee but since I would rather show than tell the lessons will increase gradually in price until a fixed end of £90 per hour
