About Liam
My name is Liam Casey. I am the son of two lifelong international teachers. I have lived in 8 different countries which makes me exceptionally good at connecting with students of different cultural backgrounds. I spent a lot of my life in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia before coming to Queens University on a rugby/academic scholarship. I am a lover of sports, theatrics, and writing alike, I submit poetry and creative writing pieces into competitions frequently, I was the captain of the Queens Varsity Rugby team as well as the OUA Rugby Player of the year in 2021/2022. and I have performed in many different venues as a competitive public speaker and actor. I recently chose to leave a career of professional rugby to pursue teaching and stand-up comedy in Toronto. I have honors from Queens University in English and Drama alongside my teaching certificate. I have tutored over 20 pupils in my career.

I specialize in working with young students who are struggling with reading and literacy. A typical hour lesson for a student aged 7-12 would proceed as follows. - 5-10 minutes of warm-up reading games (can be anything from games of hangman, homonym puzzles, riddles, synonym games, or even a game of sentence Pictionary) - 10-15 minutes of phonics practice, essentially getting students to understand different letter combinations and their sounds. I.E what sounds can "OW" make in the word "Towel" vs "Tow" and teaching tricks on how to differentiate which sound is used. If need be I will start by simply helping determine which sound each letter can make. - 15 minutes of reading practice with examples of words or sentences that used the phonics we have discussed that day. I also like to incorporate oral skills around pronunciations during this practice. - 10-15 minutes of writing/spelling practices, again based off the sentences or words we have already examined. - Finally, finish with another quick 5-minute word game of some kind that ties in elements of what we have reviewed that day. I also usually try to build in a quick break in order to keep the lesson invigorating. As well, I believe each learner is different so after a couple of lessons I will likely tailor the lesson differently depending on my students' needs. For older students who are trying to build their essay/creative writing skills, my lessons proceed as follows. -5 minute warm-up / get to know you exercise - Discussing the task at hand. What are they trying to improve? What is the assignment? Where are they looking for help? - From there, I like to learn through analyzing examples, either examining essays and determining key features of their structure or showing videos of compelling Ted Talks or motivational speakers and getting students to determine how the ideas were laid out. What makes them effective? - After this, I like to shift to their work, having students describe to me what ideas they want to get across and knowing what we know now, how will they organize it? Or how can it be changed? - Finally, I always like to finish with vocabulary building games because no matter what type of writing you are doing, using strong diction is always beneficial. These are a few of the types of lessons I mainly do but I can offer much more. I am a working actor and stand-up comedian and have taught workshops in both. I also competed in public speaking through my university and would have skills to share with those who are nervous about presenting in a school setting. Above all, I believe the best learning occurs when there is a safe environment, laughter, and student-specific instruction.

Liam built a great connection with my kids. He tutored both my son and daughter in person and not only did they really enjoy the lesson but he greatly improved their literacy. He was always kind and professional and I often heard laughing when they were working in the dining room.
I recommend him as a tutor, he is very kind young man. What impressed me most about Liam was how much he actually cared and connected with my kids. They way he prepared the tutorial lessons and honestly, just the way he talked to them sincerely and kindly. This helped my children engage with the material more deeply and their writing improved significantly in a short amount of time.
