About Raoul
My name is Raoul, and I am a graduate from the University of Manchester. I achieved a first class master's degree in physics with theoretical physics, and will begin a PhD in September in statistical physics/applied maths.
Although I enjoyed all aspects of theoretical physics during my degree, I am now mainly interested in applying it to ecology. My PhD research will aim to take ideas from statistical physics, and use them to describe ecosystems and interactions between species. I hope that with this I will be able to use maths and physics to understand and protect the natural world.
I have plenty of experience as a tutor, both privately and through other platforms.
I also have professional experience as a software developer, and am more than happy to teach a range of programming languages. I have mainly worked with C#, SQL, HTML, CSS, and Javascript, but have also used C/C++ and Python.

I think that the most important thing when learning about something is to enjoy it! This means the student will be eager to learn and fulfil their potential, which is why I aim to make my lessons as interesting and engaging as possible. I hope to share my enthusiasm for physics and maths, whilst ensuring my tutees achieve the highest grades they can!
My tutorials are individually tailored to each student, however they usually follow this structure:
Firstly we will discuss the ideas that you want to cover, and decide exactly what we want to focus on during the session.
After this we'll go through the ideas together, and make sure that you have a really solid understanding of the core concepts. One fun thing about physics and maths is that there are often many different ways of thinking about and understanding a problem, and we will work together to find the best fit for you.
The main section of any session should involve working out problems together. These could be from past exams, existing sets, or questions I've come up with myself. I've found that working out problems is by far the best way to improve in maths and physics, and really helps with ensuring you understand everything. Practising past exam questions is especially useful, as it help you build the skills and confidence necessary to tackle real exam questions and get the grades!
We'll then end with a quick recap of what you've learned, and might discuss what we want to cover in the next session.
