About Matthew
I am a mature student at the University of Edinburgh nearing the completion of my philosophy degree.
I personally love philosophy, and enjoy many of the disciplines within it.
I pride myself on being highly multifaceted, and am confident in my ability to provide you with the in-depth analysis required for diving into the academic discipline of Philosophy.

I offer these lessons as a general option as opposed to my focused lessons, which go 100% in on things like Ethics, History of Philosophy, Thesis Design, or Essay Writing. This lesson will cover a varied range of topics within Philosophy and advanced academic skills. There is no rigid required focus.
The idea is that gaining a foot in the door of each major area—from History, Logic, and Ethics to Metaphysics and Ontology—enables you to approach philosophical problems with more independent rigour and informed perspectives.
Beyond the core content, we will focus on formal writing and thesis design. An essential part of Philosophy is not just understanding content and critically analysing it, but learning to communicate your thoughts with a powerful thesis in mind. Learning to do this at a University level will be interwoven into our lessons whenever relevant.
Philosophy shouldn’t feel like staring at a brick wall. If you’re prepping for university or just diving into the deep end of Ethics and Metaphysics out of sheer intrigue, the jump in difficulty can be a bit of a shock. My lessons aren't about lecturing you for an hour while you take notes—they’re about giving you the "Toolkit" you need to actually do philosophy yourself.
What we’ll actually do:
Demystify the Texts: We’ll take those dense, "word-salad" passages and break them down into plain English.
Sharpen Your Arguments: It’s one thing to have an opinion and another to build a logical fortress around it. We’ll work on your formal logic and essay structure.
Think Out Loud: These sessions are a safe space to ask the "stupid" questions. We’ll debate, poke holes in theories, and figure out why these old ideas still matter today.
My Approach: I keep things relaxed. I’m currently a student at the University of Edinburgh, so I’m right there in the thick of it with you. I know exactly what professors are looking for and where most students get tripped up. Whether we’re tackling the history of thought or the weirdness of ontology, the goal is to make you feel confident, capable, and actually excited about the subject.
Location: I am based at the University of Edinburgh. If you are local, I am more than happy to conduct lessons on campus in a booked study room or at the library.

Matthew has never met a stranger. I got to know him through Superprof as my philosophy tutor, and from the very first session he created a comfortable and engaging space. Despite my being mentally fried and anguished from dense readings & looming deadlines, his tutoring style carried me through the murky depths of first sem without the passive aggressiveness of most tutors. When motivation dips, Matthew somehow helps you push through by a sheer tyranny of will, keeping sessions focused but encouraging, and most importantly— keeping you accountable!
Thanks Matty!!Met Matthew as a flatmate, and within the first five minutes we were out for a meal together; Matthew is very approachable and has consistently proven to be a reliable friend. Given his understanding character and overall optimistic attitude towards life, I quickly find myself confiding in him when I struggle. His immense curiosity earned him a great expanse of knowledge, anything from philosophy and religion, to social media ethics. And his impeccable dedication to his work makes him exemplary in his understanding of approaching university curriculum.
Matthew is patient, kind, and really knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. 9/10
Matthew was a great fit for my teenager and made essay writing feel much more manageable.
He explained things clearly, gave practical feedback, and helped build confidence rather than just fixing the work for them. We saw real improvement in structure and clarity, and my teen actually felt more comfortable approaching writing assignments.
I’d happily recommend Matthew to other parents.View more recommendations
