About Michelle

I have been teaching students for almost 30 years one on one, small groups (2-6) and larger groups of 10. My students consist of preschoolers through college (six months through 78 years of age). The students include individuals who are general education students who want to improve, students with educational disabilities who have learned how to manage their schoolwork and progress in the classroom , improved their language skills and development, attained associates degrees, and passed college entrance tests in order to enter the college of their choice. In addition, I have worked with young and older adults who are second language learners who want to improve their English in order to advance their career.

I have a specialist degree in Educational Technology, Master's in Curiculum and Instruction, in addition to certifications in Special Education, Elementary Education and English as a Second Language. My teaching philosophy can be summarized in one sentence, which is a variation on the Golden Rule: "Teach and treat my students as I would like to be taught and treated." I firmly believe that in order to our students to be successful, educators need to be fully educated in the use, development and acquisition of technology for and in the classroom. I continue to learn, along with my students, and I try to remain open-minded, and willing to grow in my beliefs and practices as an educator and instructional designer.

As a wife of a retired Navy veteran, I have taught in a variety classrooms and online, in various states and in various teaching positions. I have taught students as young as six months and as old as 78 years old. I prefer to work with students using the direct instruction approach based on an individually designed lesson format for each student based on their needs. My first lesson is free and is used to get to know the student, their educational needs and their interests. I have been a special educator and have worked with a variety of students whose disabilities include, but not limited to ADHD, Autism, ED, non verbal learning disability, Specific Learning Disability, Language disorders.

Based on my experiences as an educator, there are certain characteristics I know that are essential to being a successful educator. These characteristics include (in no particular order): Respectful, Empathetic, Humorous, Prepared, and Kind. I believe if I can succeed on these traits, they form a strong foundation for other characteristics that form a strong character. As the saying goes, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”

In summary, I try to take a holistic view of the teaching and the learning process. We are becoming a global society and tolerance, respect and knowledge of one another's culture is of the utmost importance. Technology has enabled me to use a variety of tools, methods and strategies, not only to help students with the course content but with their personal growth as well, leading to better outcomes for students in the acquisition of their short-term and long-term goals.

My online rates are lower because I prefer this manner of instruction and I don't have to use my car to travel.
