About Ben
As a professional educator, I understand the importance of the relationship between teacher and student. I always aim to provide a supportive environment where students can make mistakes and learn from them in order to get better. School and learning don't have to be stressful and I pride myself on making things feel challenging in ways that inspire students to go deeper and think for themselves. It is important to me to maintain professional accountability and decorum while inviting a more substantive relationship to enrich the academic experience.
I personally maintain a broad swathe of interests including surfing, skateboarding, camping, hiking, food, theatre, visual art and music. I love when I can use pop culture, contemporary music and current events to deepen my teaching practice and love even more when students share their interests with me. I practice meditation regularly and place a high value on my mental health as well as supporting the mental health of others when I can.
My students know me as someone they can trust with their problems, academic or personal, and someone who is a good listener. I am hungry for experiences to enrich my life and love hearing about people's unique experiences and lives. I'm always ready to help and always look forward to getting to know those I work with.

Hello!
Im an experienced public-school educator who has taught all ages from 7th grade to early college level courses. I have a master's degree in special education from St. John's University and received tenure in June 2021.
I'm great at helping students to hone their skills and impulses when it comes to writing. Writing can be complex and challenging in any form and knowing how and what to communicate in a given circumstance is a skill that crosses all subject areas and many arenas of life. I work with students to understand their passions and perspectives while helping them to convey those things in clear and impactful writing.
I also have a long history of studying the more complex forms of writing like poetry from classical to contemporary, Shakespeare, other classic texts and language theory. Reading the work of others is often the best way to learn to write like our favorite authors, so my instruction focuses on reading as well.
My work with students always starts with building an understanding of where a student is starting from and what they are most interested in on a personal level. I believe we must meet students where they are and appeal to their interests in order to build strong foundations. From there, I work with students to provide rigorous instruction in the areas they need the most support. Through observing models, analyzing texts and using verbal discussions to support written work, I use many approaches to help my students as best I can to grow as academics and as people. My lessons almost always use an "I do, we do, you do" model and students are given ample support and practice opportunities until they have mastered the skills with the ability to replicate with little to no support.
I primarily teach High School aged students, but I am comfortable with Middle School and Early College Students as well. I pride myself on providing a supportive, genuine and stress free environment for students by forging personal connections and positive relationships. In my time as an educator, I have been lucky to build strong relationships with students across a broad spectrum of personalities.
Thanks for your interest and please reach out with any further questions.
