About Rose Ann

Having taught various age groups at different international schools in the UAE for the past 13 years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of how to adapt my teaching style to suit the diverse backgrounds and learning needs of my students. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with children from all over the world, which has broadened my approach to language teaching, especially in the areas of speed reading, phonetics, and spelling. One of the most valuable aspects of my experience is the ability to tailor lessons based on the unique learning preferences and cultural differences of each student. I’ve found that children from different countries and educational systems often bring a variety of strengths and challenges to the classroom. To address this, I focus on creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every child feels valued, whether they are native English speakers or learners of English as a second language. In teaching **speed reading**, I make sure to assess each child’s reading level and interests. I introduce books that are both age-appropriate and culturally relevant, ensuring they connect with the material. I’ve worked with younger students to build their foundational reading skills, focusing on phonics and sight words, while with older students, I focus on improving their reading fluency and comprehension. I use a variety of interactive activities, such as timed reading challenges, comprehension questions, and group reading sessions, to make reading both engaging and educational. For **phonetics**, I always keep in mind the linguistic backgrounds of my students. For some, English sounds may be very different from their native languages, so I use a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods to help them grasp sounds and pronunciations. I integrate songs, rhymes, and storytelling into my lessons to make phonics fun, and I often use props or flashcards to reinforce letter-sound connections. I also encourage peer interaction, allowing children to practice sounds with one another, which has proven to be highly effective. When it comes to **spelling**, I’ve seen firsthand how different spelling systems around the world impact students’ ability to learn English spelling rules. For children who are already familiar with phonetic languages, I focus on word patterns and English spelling exceptions. For students from non-phonetic language backgrounds, I emphasize more memorization and reinforcement of common spelling rules and sight words. I often incorporate interactive games like spelling bees, word searches, and puzzles to make spelling enjoyable, while also using technology to keep students engaged with fun apps and online platforms that allow them to practice spelling in a dynamic way. Throughout all of this, I am constantly adapting my approach based on feedback from my students and their progress. Having worked with children from such a diverse range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, I’ve learned the importance of being flexible, patient, and creative in my teaching. This experience has not only shaped my teaching methods but has also given me a deep appreciation for the power of language in connecting people from all walks of life.

For my English lessons, I approach them with a playful and engaging style that suits children aged 3 to 8. Here's how I structure them based on speed reading, phonetics, and spelling:

1. **Speed Reading (Ages 5-8)**
I begin by selecting age-appropriate, engaging stories, gradually increasing their difficulty. I make sure to focus on simple sentences for younger children, while for older kids, I challenge them with more complex sentences. I incorporate games, such as "reading relay" where they take turns reading aloud, or use flashcards with words from the text to promote recognition. The goal is to help them build fluency and confidence without pressure. I use a mix of short, interactive reading sessions to maintain their attention.

2. **Phonetics (Ages 3-6)**
For younger kids, I make phonics lessons interactive with activities like singing songs about letter sounds and using flashcards with pictures. For example, I might say, "A says 'ah' as in apple" and then show them the picture. I use toys, props, and puppets to make it engaging. As they get older, I introduce blends (like "bl," "tr") and digraphs (like "sh," "ch") in fun ways—sometimes by doing actions for the sounds. The key is repetition and active participation.

3. **Spelling (Ages 4-8)**
For younger learners, I keep spelling simple by focusing on common sight words. We practice by writing them on big paper, and I often turn spelling into games, like "word hopscotch" where they jump to the correct letter. For older children, I introduce word families (like -at, -ing) and rhyming patterns to build their understanding. I give them opportunities to write simple sentences using their spelling words and encourage them to sound out unfamiliar words. For fun, I sometimes use interactive apps or digital games that reinforce spelling in an enjoyable way.

Throughout all of this, I maintain a patient, encouraging tone to ensure each child feels comfortable and motivated to learn. The main goal is to make language feel accessible and exciting for them!
