About Emma
Hello! I'm Emma Spies and my pronouns are she/her. I completed my Master's in English Literature at UCLA in 2020 and am currently in the last stages of the UCLA PhD program in English. When I was 24, I started my higher education journey at Hinds Community College in Mississippi, and my passion is helping other non-traditional learners have the most worthwhile and enjoyable university experience they possibly can. When you connect with me, we will develop a plan together to ensure that you are not only successful with your individual assignments, but in the course as a whole. I am excited to help you connect with literary texts, feel more confident analyzing and interpreting them, and improve your critical writing skills. I truly believe the Humanities are a crucial part of a well-rounded education, no matter what you plan to do beyond college, and the most beautiful part of strengthening your writerly voice is discovering what you truly want to say (and realizing why it matters!).

My teaching methodology is rooted in my belief that literature should be fun. I engage my students with elements of texts with which they can personally connect. I also demonstrate the ways that writing about literature is also enjoyable self-expression.
