About Carole
I have worked as a college English professor at several schools in the USA (MICA, Johns Hopkins, Towson College, etc). I hold a Master's Degree in Teaching English and specialize in academic discourse, composition, literary interpretation and English as a Second Language (ESL). I lived in Japan for 2 years and have travelled extensively as I am a curious person who loves learning about other cultures. I have helped hundreds of students read and write better, understand literature and course assignments, perfect oral fluency, and gain confidence as critical thinkers and speakers of English. I love one-on-one sessions and helping with college admission essays!
Besides working with students, I am an artist (painter), passionate about animal welfare, and love to exercise.
I prefer to work with teen-age and adult learners and promise to be a supportive, helpful and reliable teacher to help students reach their language goals.

I adjust my teaching style to each learner and this is done by discussing the student's goals and motivation. It is important to find the right materials to study, to be patient and an active listener and to offer constructive criticism to my students. I believe people learn best when they feel safe, relaxed and supported and when they are truly interested in the subject they are studying. Learning should be fun and empowering.
Here are some notes I've received from students...knowing I helped them achieve their goals makes me feel so good:
Female, S. Korea: “I am actually really happy today and want you to know why…the reason. I finally got the artist visa approval yesterday…Thank you very much for your help!!”
Female, S. Korea: “Carole, you are one of the best teachers in my entire life. You really opened my eyes to see the other perspectives in writing.”
Male, Haiti: “I am very grateful that you have supported my application (to graduate school in America) since the beginning.”
Female, Egypt: “I passed it [the TOEFL] because of your help. Thank you so much.”
Female, Vietnam: “Thank you for everything. I feel lucky to have you as a teacher. You have such great enthusiasm and patience.”
Female, China: “Thank you very much for the extra help on the writing for my application [to college in NYC}.”
Female, S. Korea: “It was a wonderful experience learning with you this summer.”

I write and publish academic medical research articles. Carole has been an incredible asset to assist me with proofing these papers before submission for publication. Her attention to detail and helpful suggestions have made my work more easily understood!
I have known Carole for many years and have always been impressed by her dedication to teaching and her rapport with her students. I know she has worked extensively with ESL students and helped many of them succeed in their college courses. When my daughter needed some help with her college application essay, I reached out to Carole. She worked with my daughter on several drafts of her essay. My daughter said Carole gave her very specific suggestions on where to focus and revise for her application; I am happy to say she got into her "first choice" school! I highly recommend Carole as a tutor for anyone hoping to improve their writing skills or improve their English.
Nancy Reference LibrarianCarole is a fantastic teacher! She helped proofread all of my AP English papers in high school and always left in depth recommendations for improvement. I always appreciated that she took the time to explain her edits rather than simply writing "awk" and calling it a day. Our conversations greatly improved my writing and I'd highly recommend her to English students of any level!
