I have been doing maths for over 20 years.
I have a degree in Engineering, and a Masters and PhD in Mathematics.
I worked in Academia at Oxford University for a period of time, but since then I have been working in AI and Data Science, still using maths in my daily job.

Maths is like a pyramid - it requires a solid foundational knowledge, otherwise all new concepts are taught on a weak foundation. This is one of the key reasons students don't like maths.
For me it is key to teach in a way that students understand the concepts intuitively, not just memorise them.
