About GinaMaria

Welcome! My name is GinaMaria Correia, and I’m excited to guide you on your journey into American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture. I bring over 13 years of experience as an ASL instructor, Deaf Language Specialist, and advocate for language access in both educational and clinical settings. I’ve taught ASL at the college level, developed online courses, and worked directly with Deaf and hearing students of all backgrounds. My teaching style is immersive, interactive, and student-focused. Whether you're brand new to ASL or looking to strengthen your skills, you’ll find a supportive, inclusive environment that encourages growth, cultural understanding, and real-world communication. Lessons are designed to be engaging and accessible, blending visual learning with structured feedback and hands-on practice. About the lesson

My teaching approach to American Sign Language (ASL) is immersive, student-centered, and culturally responsive. I utilize the Direct Experience Method, which emphasizes visual language modeling and hands-on practice, and I avoid spoken English during instruction to reinforce ASL immersion. Lessons integrate visual aids, real-life dialogues, role play, and video-based quizzes to support both expressive and receptive skill development.

I also incorporate Deaf culture education throughout the curriculum, helping students understand the sociolinguistic and historical contexts of the language. My methodology ensuring that students not only learn vocabulary and grammar but also develop meaningful communicative competence.

Warm-up (5 min):
Silent introduction activity using fingerspelling practice.
Presentation (15 min):
Video demonstration of how to introduce yourself, including name, hearing status, and basic pleasantries.
Guided Practice (15 min):
Repetition drills with video prompts; peer responses in video comments.
Cultural Insight (5 min):
Short discussion on name signs and their cultural relevance.
Independent Activity (Homework):
Students submit a 1–2 minute video introducing themselves and asking a question to a peer.
Feedback & Reflection:
Instructor gives personalized video feedback; students reflect in written format on what they learned and found challenging.
