About Christopher

Christopher P. Whittington Jr. is an alumni of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL (B.A. Theology, '21), where he studied and completed a thesis on the Christological Cosmology of St. Maximus the Confessor. Since graduation, Christopher has worked full time as a Middle School Humanities Instructor and Tutor and moonlighted as an independent scholar, taking advantage of free summers to participate in conferences, seminars, and book studies with the Abigail Adams Institute at Harvard University, the Eighth Day Institute, the American Academy of Religion, and the Heart of Fire Fellowship (Denver), among others. He plans on continue his theological study at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary and hopes to work on a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology soon after. Currently, he is working on a book titled, "Technology and Eschatology," focusing primarily on the Russian sophiological contradiction to Marxist materialism in the 20th century.

When you sign up for lessons with me, I offer a three tiered approach to help you shine in (or out of!) the classroom in your classical high school, undergraduate, or graduate enrichment courses. Depending on the situation, I cater to student needs whether there is a specific syllabus you're required to follow or if you're looking for some extra stimulation over a break.

1) Understanding Basic Concepts of Philosophical Thought
Each new student will begin with a brief (15-30 min) exploratory session where we go over your academic background, goals, and interests. This will help me tailor lessons specifically for you.
Once we've established your needs, our first lessons will cover fundamental terms/ideas of the period(s) you are studying. Think of this as a 'birds-eye-view' of content.

In the case you are taking lessons for extra help with a class, this will be a few summary lessons of what you can expect from the content of the semester/year.

2) Conversing with Great Philosophy
After 2-3 introductory lessons, we will begin reading texts for the period you wish to study, typically addressing 1-2 readings per lesson. Prior to each lesson, you will be asked to complete part or all of the reading and come prepared with questions/observations/applications of the text. This will take up the bulk of 'coursework,' allowing your questions to bear upon the text and allowing me to teach you to read the text well.

In the case you are taking lessons for extra help with a class, this will center upon the readings for your class.

3) Becoming a Philosopher
In the final 2-3 lessons, we will work through writing an undergraduate level thesis in which you expound upon another philosophical work. We'll cover everything from fundamental grammar to structure of a thesis to using your sources well. By the end, you'll have a full paper that you can add to your portfolio!

In the case you are taking lessons for extra help with a class, this step will look essentially the same but will focus on the writing assignment(s) for your coursework.

I look forward to working with you!
