About Dr Sharmin
I am a Neuroscience PhD graduate from the University of British Columbia (Canada), a world-ranked university (QS World Ranking 35). For over a decade, I have taught theoretical concepts, scientific writing, and practical experiments to students at a variety of levels.
I have mentored high school students on projects that won science fairs, achieved highest marks in their classes, and entered their chosen universities with scholarships. I have mentored numerous undergraduate students, a majority of whom are now successful medical school graduates, scientists, researchers, innovators or professors. I have also advised on research design, analysis, manuscript edits, and dissertation edits to PhD colleagues from cellular and molecular biology (MSc, PhD), neuroscience/neurobiology (BSc, MSc, and PhD), zoology (MSc, PhD), pharmacology (BSc, MSc), Anatomy (PhD), and civil engineering (PhD).
My research focused on brain development in health and disease and innovations in biotechnology. Using fluorescence microscopy and genetically encoded plasmids, I showed how new neurons grow dendrites in an intact and living animal. I also co-designed a MATLAB-based software to analyse dendrite growth patterns. My laboratory expertise is extensive, advanced, and diverse. Examples of these include: cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, microscopy, anatomy, and animal behavioural studies. After my PhD, I completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Neurology at UBC, a foremost clinical and research institution in Canada, where I focused on neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, Autism), sports-related concussions, new brain technologies and brain research involving human participants.
During my postdoctoral fellowship, I served as the Associate Editor of a 500+ page book on the future of brain science and technology, called 'Neuroethics: Anticipating the Future', published by the OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS. I have also authored PEER-REVIEWED publications and book chapters. I have presented scientific posters and talks at numerous international professional conferences. Please see list of my publications below in the "Detail" section.
Science is fun and amazing! Let me be a part of your academic, career and scientific success!

Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral RESEARCH tutorials:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the FREE 30 min session, I will be honest about my expertise and limitations to help you decide whether to continue lessons with me. I am highly experienced in working with international students and diverse academic disciplines.
Whether your aim is to craft a compelling research proposal, draft or edit a well-researched literature review, achieve flow in your M.Sc. or Ph.D. dissertation, brainstorm alternative analyses or display format to present your data, find the right words to respond to manuscript reviewers, or prepare for your conference poster or slide presentation, I want to turn your challenge into an achievement.
I have taught practical and theoretical advanced biology techniques to students who have excelled in their chosen fields, ranging from medicine to cell and molecular biology research to allied health professions. I can provide practical insight into research design from personal experience.
GCSE/High School and A-LEVEL exam prep and university entrance coaching:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I offer a FREE 30 min intro session to help you decide whether my expertise is suitable for your educational goals. I will work with you in your specific areas of difficulty. Examples include:
The immune system
Protein synthesis
Cell-signalling pathways
Action potential
Gel electrophoresis
Protein biochemistry
My pre-undergraduate coursework was completed in the U.S.A. and I completed a total of 33 Advanced Placement (AP) credits, and achieved the highest possible score (5/5) in AP Biology. I also ranked as one of the top 10 students in my high school, equivalent to A-level in the UK.
