About Mark
Hello, I'm Mark,
I'm an Art Historian (Ph.D), educated at Birkbeck and Oxford, and also a Historian with a broad range of published work and teaching interests to match.
I have taught many subjects, including Imperial Russia, the Italian Renaissance, the Cuban Revolution, and art history courses at several institutions, usually with a focus on 20th-century art, though I have experience of several more topics, across other centuries.
My experience includes teaching A-Level and undergraduates, including long and short essay questions and visual analysis papers.
As a 1st class student who went on to gain a masters at Oxford, and then a Ph.D, I know what it takes to achieve a strong academic trajectory.

Hello!
Having tutored for nine years, working at universities, colleges and in private tuition, my experience comprises the teaching of students at different qualification levels, while my knowledge of art history and history spans classical antiquity to the present.
I often help by discussing the questions you're working toward (essays, exams) and then creating a clear plan to tackle them with great results in mind. This includes studying relevant images together. I can also help with the structuring, planning and editing of your thesis.
My teaching style is flexible and is tailored to your needs and interests, with lessons being mostly conversation based, exploring subjects by using artistic vocabulary, recognising key historical context and the importance of different movements.
The first lesson would be an introductory session that will help me get to know you and your interests in art or history, what you are hoping to learn and the direction you would like to go. My aim is to encourage and motivate you so you develop your research skills with confidence.
Please be aware that at this time I am only able to offer online lessons.
Typical lesson length is 1hr, though happy to discuss.
Educated to Ph.D, I have considerable teaching experience and strong knowledge of a range of art history's "isms", along with key theorists and essential case studies. Whatever subject you're learning, I'm very likely to have a good knowledge of it!
History teaching also covers a remarkably broad spectrum, from Classical Antiquity to the Second World War, from the Age of Discovery to the Tudors.
