About Laura
Hi there! I'm Laura, and I'm a PhD candidate at Durham University focusing on Music Analysis and Music Perception. It all began with piano lessons at the age of four (I've played the piano longer than you've been around, yes!). Not all was fun and games as I went through bouts of wanting to be a lawyer and a theologian, which probably came across in my varied A-Level subjects: Chemistry, Maths, Theology and Music. I had particular interests in Theology and Music, but in the end chose to read the latter at university. That said, I still spend time reflecting on all things philosophical and religious, so if you need someone to muse through these things in preparation for your examination, drop me a line and I would be very happy to help!
My first student was a friend's brother who wanted to learn the piano and I tutored him when I was 15. That proved to be successful and he obtained a Distinction in his Grade 3 examination. Since then, I've branched out to include Music Theory, Music at degree level and Music Diploma paperwork, all with excellent results. I also help my younger cousins, nieces and nephews with their Maths and Sciences.
As an analyst, I like to encourage others to think critically, so you'd be getting lots of thought-provoking prompts from me. Be ready to be asked 'why' many, many times: this sounds intimidating at first, but I find that this interrogative method makes you learn a lot very quickly. At the end of the day, you not only ace your exams, but also think critically - a very important skill that will work wonders for you for the rest of your life!
