About Joanne
I have taught English to beginners as well as to older professionals who need to improve their writing skills. As a reporter and news photographer I learned the importance of critical thinking skills, careful listening, and asking the questions under the questions. As an editor, I applied my expertise in English grammar and mechanics to fine-tuning manuscripts and articles for authors and reporters. As a technical writer, I learned to write clear, concise prose that enables the reader to learn new concepts and procedures quickly.
I hold a B.A. With Distinction in English from The Ohio State University and completed two semesters in the Master's program for English Literature at The Catholic University of America. I am the former editor of a news weekly in the Washington, D.C. area and a features and arts critic for newspapers and magazines on both coasts. I have edited many manuscripts for major publishing houses and for independent authors. I have also written and edited customer-facing documentation for Xerox, Palm, HP, and many other Silicon Valley computer companies.

I tutor high school and college students who are struggling with English. I tailor lessons to each student's needs and character. I offer a safe, positive environment for exploring and learning English.
In the first tutoring session, I identify the student’s learning issues, personal interests, and tutoring goals. I also establish rapport and trust. This is not a class you can fail.
Together we address assignments for which the student needs help. Sessions are lively and collaborative as we address stumbling blocks and resolve them.
Subsequent sessions continue to take up the identified issues and deal with the student’s ongoing assignments.
There is more to learning English than mechanics. My tutoring can also include writing the essay, close reading and comprehension of assigned works, and writing the research paper.
