I am a teacher (MA in Sinhala Language), trainer as well as a social worker. I have the skill to teach. Understanding a student's way of studying helps me to teach. I was the best Asian Sinhalese Language (Life Skills) trainer 2011/12, conducted by International Youth Foundation. More than 20 years of experience with diplomat personalities, business personalities, INGO personalities, university students, foreign and local children and adults, and also children who are unable to fulfill their literacy knowledge. Sinhalese language can divide into two. As spoken and written. Even in spoken classes, I teach Sinhalese alphabet. It will help the student to recognize correct words and pronunciation properly. Using audio clips can improve the pronunciation and completing homework and memories through flashcards will be the best things to reach the goal. Beginner to Intermediate level will have different sets of lessons. Intermediate students can learn poems (Sri Lankan folk poems), cultural/novels/history books, and other interesting fields as requested. Learning a language is an excellent thing to do in our lives. Learning a totally different and beautiful language is a miracle. Sinhalese Language is one of the best and beautiful languages to learn. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity! Don't waste time anymore come and join!

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

"While my origins provided the cultural foundation, my professional fluency was built through academic rigor and discipline. My journey began with a BA in Social Sciences, which taught me the dynamics of human society, and culminated in an MA in Linguistics. This path was inspired by a professor who showed me that language is the soul of a nation. My fluency is a blend of native heritage and 20 years of scientific study into how we communicate."
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

"I view Umberto Eco as the perfect emblem. As an intellectual who bridged the gap between social sciences, semiotics, and literature, he embodied the 'total' speaker. He understood that a language carries history, philosophy, and social structures within every sentence. Like him, I encourage my students to see Sinhala not just as words, but as a gateway to understanding a whole civilization."
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

"Through the lens of my Social Sciences background, I am fascinated by the 'honorifics' and the pragmatic nuances in Sinhala. The way we adjust our language based on social respect and community is a beautiful 'social dance.' After 20 years of teaching, I’ve learned that mastering these nuances is what allows a student to truly connect with the heart of Sri Lankan people."
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

"Language is the fabric of society. To me, speaking and teaching it matters because it facilitates genuine human connection. It is the most effective tool for breaking down social barriers and building empathy. Having worked with diverse nations for 20 years, I have seen firsthand how language can create global opportunities and personal transformation."
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

"The primary obstacle isn't grammar—it is a lack of enthusiasm. Without a spark, the brain stays closed.

    • The Catalyst: First, you must cultivate enthusiasm for the culture and the process.
    • The Trust: Second, you must trust your tutor and yourself.
My 20 years of experience have taught me how to identify the 'different differences' in students from various nations. I adapt my trust-building process to fit your specific cultural psychology, creating a high-energy environment where your enthusiasm can thrive."
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

"During my BA studies in Social Sciences, I realized that knowing a dictionary definition is not the same as knowing a culture. I once saw a student fail to connect despite perfect grammar because they didn't understand the 'social vibe' of the conversation. This taught me that language is 50% words and 50% social intuition—a balance I have spent two decades perfecting in my teaching."
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

"I believe in a simple philosophy: 'If you want to learn how to swim, you have to get into the water.' To truly master Sinhala, you must travel to Sri Lanka and immerse yourself in its 'water.' Textbooks can only take you so far. When you are here, breathing the air and interacting with the people, your knowledge becomes alive. My role is to be your expert guide in this water, using my 20 years of experience to ensure you don't just 'tread water' but actually learn to swim with the current of our local culture."
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

"What makes me a Superprof is the powerful combination of a Master of Arts, a BA in Social Sciences, and 20 years of experience navigating the 'different differences' of global learners. I don't just teach you how to speak; I teach you how to belong. I provide a high-trust, high-enthusiasm environment where we master the social art of communication. I am not just a tutor; I am your bridge to the authentic Sri Lankan experience."
