About Stephanie

Education Background:
Hello! I am a native Chinese speaker from Southern China. Growing up speaking Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese at home, I received higher education in the English-Speaking World (US and Ireland). I also exchanged for one year in Paris studying European history and Aesthetics in French. I derive great joy from speaking a foreign language and chatting with native speakers. I am curious to find out how certain universal concepts are demonstrated in different languages. Being able to communicate in another tongue and understanding the history, traditions, and culture associated with the language really opens the door to a whole new world of art, music, cuisine, and film that I wouldn't have been able to access otherwise. I always have an immense passion for philosophy, literature, history, and arts, and my leisure reading habits have always centered around these subjects. As a linguaphile, I was a habitué of the foreign language centers in Boston, Paris, and Dublin. Thanks to these experiences, I understand the possible pitfalls and challenges of learning a new language. Meanwhile, I have also learned to study the etymology of words, discover different learning methods, and find means for progressing quickly and efficiently.

Work Experience:
In Boston, I taught American children in an elementary school to learn simple Chinese for one semester as a volunteer; this was the first time I considered teaching a rewarding career. After I graduated with a Master's in Philosophy, I returned to China in 2018 and taught English academic writing & IELTS at a public foreign language university. After that, I worked as an English instructor at private training centers in Shenzhen and tutored students from International schools such as BASIS & HARROW and prospective pupils in US schools. Up till this point, I have worked with students of all age groups and levels, from public and private school systems, with varied learning objectives, of different nationalities, in groups or private tutorials. My clients include primary and middle schoolers who want to improve close reading skills, high schoolers who need to take TEFOL & IELTS for overseas university applications, and US college students of Humanities majors who need help with their final papers. Meanwhile, I started teaching Mandarin and Cantonese to speakers of other languages online last year. As an experienced language instructor and educator, I see each individual's unique potential to succeed at their own pace. I can identify students' problems and provide effective solutions on the spot. I also enjoy a great sense of accomplishment in helping my students progress and achieve their learning goals. I aim to help my students excel in their academic journey and engage and assist them in growing personally.

Teaching Philosophy & Curriculum:
I believe that interest and clear purpose serve as a catalyst that energizes the learning journey. My lesson is learners-centered and based on students' learning styles, and the curriculum is organized around the interests, actual needs, specific learning goals, abilities, and aspirations of students. I also aim to not only offer structured and engaging course content that propels students for self-practice but also give my students a measurable sense of what can be accomplished, so the whole learning experience becomes relevant, useful, and lasting to you. For beginners, I will first provide you with a basic framework for the language being taught, which is in line with the traditional academic approach. For example, you will learn about 15 Chinese characters in each class (60 minutes). You will also learn to read simple Chinese sentences from the beginning. With a solid foundation laid, you will not feel lost by being overwhelmed with hundreds of different unrelated Chinese characters. In lesson 10, you will start reading short Chengyu stories. Drilling and grinding are the inevitable processes of any language learning, but I also incorporate effective learning methodologies to help students absorb knowledge, such as Leitner's system of spaced repetition memorization method. I will add in-class vocab pop quizzes as well as some exercises as homework to help consolidate and deepen what you have learned in my class.

After about 20 lessons, you will have learned several hundred characters already. By then I will start to have simple conversations with you to strengthen the memory of the most commonly used sentence patterns so that you are conditioned to the tone and the pace of everyday conversation. Once you got the hang of it, I will gradually increase the practice of dialogue in all kinds of practical scenarios, such as reading the Chinese menu and understanding the characters of each dish, telling the taxi driver where you’re going, or changing the destination. The more advanced level of the course will focus on interactive discussion while adding correct grammar usage and pronunciation correction throughout the process. I will also expose you to more intellectually stimulating topics and analyze excerpts from literature, news, movies, music lyrics, etc, and encourage you to express opinions and thoughts. My goal is to make language learning an authentic and fun experience. The use of language needs to be closely related to your real life. By simulating various life scenarios, you get to practice the language you use the most. I also exchange roles with my students, asking them to explain the meaning of a certain word or idiom to me and make them create their own sentences. It's okay if you don't remember a particular expression, find the right word or pronounce it correctly every time. Mistakes actually help with learning and progress. I help my students learn through trial and error and exploration, preparing them to take ownership of their learning and continue progressing in the future without me. My experience tells me that language skills can be improved with time and long-term effort. I want my students to learn with confidence, make continuous progress, and develop a growth mindset. I speak multiple languages (Cantonese, English, French), which can facilitate your learning if necessary.

Course materials:
My courses offer the following skills training: reading, listening comprehension, speaking, pronunciation, spelling, grammar usage, writing, vocabulary building, idiomatic expressions, language registers, culture, and history.
My classroom materials are sourced from a gamut of study materials, from textbooks, newspapers, classic literary stories, allusions, to music and movies.
