About Laurie
My tutoring style is warm, friendly and direct. I imbue my lessons with play and humour, whilst maintaining a sense of structure and an element of formality.
I adapt my teaching style to the needs of each student, aiming not only to fill gaps in their knowledge, but to enhance their overall learning style.
In the past, I have made particularly rewarding progress with students who think they are either 'good at STEM subjects' or 'good at arts subjects'. With my background in music, I think this separation of logic and creativity is extremely reductive. I love showing more maths-minded students that comprehension and creative writing can be a great use of analytical skills. Similarly, I enjoy teaching less confident mathematicians via narratives and images.
I specialise in Key Stage 2 maths and English, and 11+ preparation including reasoning. With over 5000 hours of tutoring experience, I have a thorough knowledge of London independent school entry processes. I specialise in schools in South West London, but previous students have also gained entry to Westminster, City of London Girls' School, North London Collegiate School, and more.
Communication with parents is a key part of my work; after each lesson, I email parents a detailed lesson summary. I will offer extra support and recommendations if a student is struggling. My long-term goal, however, is to develop students' skills and confidence to the point that they no longer need me!
