About Melinda
I am a veteran teacher certified K-5 general education and K-12 special education, Specific Learning Disabilities and Emotional Impairments. I am trained in Orton Gillingham, Lindamood Bell Seeing Stars, and many additional phonological awareness, phonics, and guided reading strategies and programs. I have 19 years of teaching experience in a variety of special education classrooms and as a literacy interventionist. I have experience teaching students from Kindergarten through 9th grade. The majority of my teaching career has been with elementary age children who have difficulty in literacy. This includes pre-reading skills, phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, high frequency word automaticity, reading fluency, reading comprehension spelling, and writing. I live in Michigan with my husband, two daughters, and many animals. I have a passion for helping young learners gain confidence and a love for reading!

Tutoring will begin with getting to know your child through conversation, fun activities, and assessments to determine baseline skills in all areas of reading. Lessons will be individualized to each student's specific needs using a multi-sensory, explicit instruction approach. Together, with parent input and student input if appropriate, we will determining learning targets including short term and long term goals. Lessons will include a combination of appropriate phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, high frequency word automaticity, reading fluency, and comprehension strategies for both fiction and non-fiction text. Lessons will be engaging, fun, and focused on a positive mindset. Progress monitoring will occur at a minimum every two weeks to track progress towards learning targets. I look forward to working with your child, helping him/her progress with reading skills, improve confidence, and develop a love for reading!
