About Cindy

Hi, I’m Cindy! I’m a native Vietnamese speaker based in Montréal.

I speak Vietnamese every day with my parents and my Vietnamese friends, so the language I teach is the one real people use, not just what’s in a textbook. I’m originally from Central Vietnam and speak with a Southern accent, which is the one you’ll hear most often in Montréal and in Vietnamese communities abroad.

My years of research training taught me to break complex things down into clear, manageable steps, and that’s exactly how I teach Vietnamese: simple rules for the tones, sentence patterns and pronouns, plenty of speaking practice, and no pressure. I know how intimidating Vietnamese can feel at first, and I’ll make sure you feel comfortable making mistakes with me.

About the lesson

My teaching methodology

I teach Vietnamese the way I use it every day: by speaking. Lessons are conversation-first, so you start producing real sentences from the very first session instead of memorizing word lists. I focus on three things:

Listening and tones: Vietnamese has six tones, and I train your ear before your mouth. We practice with minimal pairs (words that differ only by tone) until you can hear and say the difference.
Pronunciation with a Southern accent: I’m originally from Central Vietnam but speak with a Southern accent, the one most commonly heard in Montréal and in Vietnamese communities abroad.
Real-life language: Vocabulary and grammar are always tied to situations you’ll actually face, like ordering food, talking with family, shopping or making small talk.

My PhD background means I explain things clearly and in a structured way. I break down tones, sentence patterns and pronouns (which can be confusing in Vietnamese) into simple rules you can apply right away.

A typical lesson (60 minutes)

Warm-up (5-10 min): Casual chat and a quick review of last lesson’s phrases
New material (15-20 min): One theme, for example ordering at a restaurant: key vocabulary, tones and sentence patterns
Speaking practice (20-25 min): Role-play and dialogues where you use the new material, with gentle corrections
Wrap-up (5 min): Summary of what you learned, plus a short practice task and notes sent after the lesson
