About Michael

I have a degree in English Education through which I volunteered for teacher aid programs for three separate schools spanning middle to high school students. I have taught in various countries, in-person and virtually, and am proficient in speaking Spanish. Experience includes student teaching in an Ecuadorian high school, tutoring university students in English in Ecuador (lessons were spoken in Spanish), group tutoring of middle school students in English after school in Washington State, and teaching Chinese students, aged five to fifteen, in English language instruction through remote video chat.

About the lesson

My teaching method is to "cradle the student in clarity." This begins with clearly explaining the objective of the lesson. Usually my objectives are phrased in the following format: "the student will be able to..." I then make sure the student understands the objective by asking them specific questions about the objective and/or allowing them to ask any questions concerning the objective.

Then, it is paramount that I understand the student's prior knowledge of the subject at hand. Beginning with questions and activities, I begin the lesson with carefully tailored methods (depending on the material and teaching environment) to understand the depth of knowledge the student has for the subject matter.

From there, I employ a three step process. I begin first with instruction, to build a base for the student's knowledge. I will explain the topic at hand, ideally employing multiple ways of displaying the information. For example, I enjoy using a variety of tools, whether that is a whiteboard, a video, a piece of writing, or whatever tool applies directly to the lesson. I do this to not only make the lesson more memorable, but also to help students who may have different learning styles and thus will internalize information differently.

Second, I employ guided practice. This gives the student the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge from instruction, but also allows them to participate in the learning of the material, ask any questions, and make any mistakes with the instructor's guidance.

Finally, I let student perform the task on their own with careful supervision. Depending on the time remaining in the lesson, I may have a closing activity to help reinforce the information they have learned in the lesson.
