About Emily

Growing up in a bilingual household shaped my own relationship with Spanish long before any formal classroom study ever entered the picture. That early, informal exposure gave me genuine insight into how heritage speakers experience language differently from typical new learners. Formal translation training later filled in structural gaps, connecting instinct with real, deliberate understanding. That combined background now shapes how closely I work with students carrying a similar bilingual upbringing.

Working with heritage speakers alongside bilingual families means recognizing existing fluency rather than treating students as complete beginners. I never underestimate what a student already knows, focusing instead on strengthening specific, genuine gaps in their Spanish. What I find most rewarding is watching a heritage speaker finally feel confident writing in a language they've spoken comfortably their whole life. That sense of ownership over both halves of their bilingual identity means a great deal to witness.

I stay closely connected to Spanish personally, through family, reading and ongoing translation work I still take on regularly. This keeps my teaching genuinely grounded in real, lived bilingual experience rather than purely academic distance. Lessons often adjust closely around whatever specific gap a student is working to close. My hope remains constant, that students leave feeling fully confident in every part of their Spanish.

Heritage speakers usually arrive with an ear already tuned to Spanish, even when reading and writing feel noticeably weaker by comparison. Bilingual families often want lessons that reinforce Spanish at home, keeping the language active rather than slowly fading through daily English use. Early sessions focus on filling specific gaps, whether that means formal grammar, spelling or vocabulary beyond casual, everyday conversation. Reading and writing practice gets introduced steadily, building structure around language many students already speak comfortably.

As formal skills catch up, students practice writing short passages, applying grammar rules to language they've mostly absorbed naturally rather than studied. Heritage speakers particularly benefit from comparing casual, spoken Spanish against more formal written structure, noticing differences they hadn't consciously considered before. Bilingual families instead often focus on shared practice, finding ways to keep Spanish present in everyday household routines. I keep lessons flexible throughout, adjusting closely to whatever specific gap a student needs addressed most.

I remind students constantly that heritage fluency is real, valuable fluency, even when formal grammar needs extra attention. Spoken comfort already gives students a genuine head start most new learners simply don't have. Lessons stay closely tied to each student's actual background and specific goals with Spanish. My focus throughout remains supportive, helping students strengthen skills they already partly carry within them.
