About Smith and Stoker
Our work is built on a shared belief that every student deserves to be taught with care, expertise and genuine enthusiasm for the subject.
Between us, we bring decades of classroom experience, examining insight and a deep shared love of English literature and language.
Marianne is our resident literature specialist and a team leader for the leading exam board, overseeing the marking of more than 4,000 papers each year. Her precision and eye for detail ensure our students understand exactly what examiners are looking for and how to deliver it.
Alex is our A Level expert, having led English departments for much of her career. Her intuitive knowledge of the curriculum and ability to recall even the tiniest thing have made her a trusted mentor for countless students.
Both of us are equally passionate about English, helping students find confidence not only in what they say but in how they say it.
Our different approaches – Marianne’s drive for aesthetic perfection and Alex’s more instinctive, gung-ho energy – balance each other perfectly. Together, we create lessons that blend structure with creativity, academic rigour with warmth. It’s this combination that allows us to support every learner in fulfilling their potential.

We offer one-to-one tutoring whether that be online or face-to-face in bespoke classrooms in either Earby or Skipton. Our tutoring sessions usually last for one hour. Both Marianne and Alex have decades of experience in teaching English with both of them having worked as Heads of English.
Each lesson is designed and adapted to the individual students’ needs. We cover the mainstream exam boards such as AQA, Edexcel, Pearson iGCSE and Eduqas at GCSE level. We also provide A Level tutoring for both English Literature and Language as we do for GCSE. Exam boards covered here are Pearson, AQA and OCR.
Smith and Stoker want to use our skills to be inclusive of all areas of educational needs for our students. We are able to support students who are sitting their A Levels in selective schools whilst also being able to reach individuals who have SEN needs or who have chosen to be home-schooled.
We believe that education shouldn’t be something that isn’t accessible to all.
