As a Chinese Mahayana bhikkhu living in a local forest monastery in Sri Lanka, I encountered challenges in daily life because many local monks speak only Sinhala and no English. To better integrate into the local Sangha community, I needed to learn Sinhala, so our Maha Thero arranged a Sinhala teacher, Mr. Malit, for me. I studied with Teacher Madit for several months. During this learning period, I deeply felt his patience and dedication toward us. At times, due to handling many tasks, I couldn’t find enough time to preview or review the language lessons. Instead of reproaching me, Teacher Madit encouraged me to approach learning with a relaxed mindset, which greatly benefited me. His teaching methods were thoughtfully crafted based on his careful observation of student feedback, and he tailored educational approaches according to different situations. Through this learning journey, I have benefited immensely. My Sinhala has improved, and I’ve developed a deeper interest in the language. I am truly grateful to Teacher Malit for his guidance.
