About Elina
My saxophone teaching philosophy centers on the synergy between technique and artistry. I prioritize establishing a solid technical base—breathing techniques, embouchure formation, finger coordination, posture, and rhythmic accuracy—so students can play with ease and longevity. Developing a rich, expressive tone is paramount; I emphasize articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and vibrato as tools for storytelling and emotional connection. Theory and ear training are seamlessly integrated with practical music-making and improvisation to deepen understanding and musicianship. Improvisation is fundamental to my approach, starting with accessible exercises that help students explore scales, melodic ideas, and rhythmic variations, building confidence and creativity. Lessons are tailored to the student’s musical interests, whether jazz, blues, pop, or classical, ensuring engagement and relevance. I employ modern technology, including recording tools and play-along tracks, to motivate and guide practice. One memorable success was helping a student overcome stage fright through gradual exposure and preparation, enabling them to perform an improvised solo with assurance. I strive to foster a positive, supportive learning environment where students grow technically and artistically while enjoying the rich world of saxophone music.

My approach to saxophone instruction is rooted in the dynamic interplay between technical mastery and artistic exploration. I emphasize a healthy, sustainable technique focused on breath support, embouchure control, articulation, finger agility, and tone development, all of which serve as the foundation for stylistic versatility.
Lessons incorporate theory, ear training, and jazz harmony early to prepare students for improvisation and ensemble contexts. Every lesson is personalized according to the student’s musical interests and aspirations, whether that means immersing in bebop vocabulary, soul ballads, or funk grooves.
Improvisation is a cornerstone of my teaching; I help students navigate the creative process step-by-step, focusing on scale application, melodic phrasing, rhythmic innovation, and dynamic shaping. I use interactive methods like improvisation games, call-and-response patterns, and real-time jamming to foster spontaneity and confidence. Technology plays a vital role: recording devices, slow-downer apps, and digital loopers enable students to practice more effectively and develop self-awareness.
I also coach performance skills, including stage presence, emotional communication, and anxiety management. One transformative teaching moment was guiding a student who had limited exposure to jazz through a customized curriculum emphasizing ear training and expressive soloing, helping them become a band leader. Above all, I want lessons to be a space where technique and creativity coexist harmoniously, inspiring students to find their authentic voice on the saxophone.
