About Vivienne

I have a consistent record of helping tutees achieve A passes in National 5 and Higher English. For example, in 2025, 14 of my 15 tutees received an A for Higher English, one received a B. I am a fully-qualified, GTC registered, English teacher with over ten years of classroom experience. I have also been a dedicated tutor for over 20 years. Moreover, I have been a SQA marker for more than a decade. This role included marking both critical essay for the exam board and Higher Paper 1: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation or RUAE (previously Close Reading) I have taught in several schools in East Renfrewshire, including Williamwood and Mearns Castle. I have a consistent record of helping tutees achieve A passes at Higher. I am a mum of two adult children who now live independently. My adorable Ragdoll cats, Oliver and Louis, still keep me on my toes though! Tuition is very rewarding for me because I like working with young people and helping them to achieve excellent results. With their whole future before them, teenagers are often refreshingly full of new perspectives. Working hard to build a warm, but professional, rapport with my tutees is key to bringing out the best in them.

About the lesson

In interpretation/comprehension Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation - RUAE (previously Close Reading) - my experience as a SQA marker provides tutees with an invaluable insight into exam strategies needed for success. Certainly, this experience leads me to use a specific question type/specific formula answer approach. Tutees are encouraged to identify a particular question type, e.g. 'the context question', and then use the appropriate formula to gain maximum marks. Thereafter, the tutee is asked to practise this particular type of question whilst also undertaking whole RUAE passages containing said question type. In the critical examination of literature particular attention is given to structure and developing a mature, yet fresh, personal response. I tend to adopt a modelling approach. Effectively, the tutee is given guidance to draft a first core essay on a given text, say, for example, 'Romeo and Juliet'. Using this exemplar, the tutee is then assigned further essay questions, drawing upon this core essay as a guideline. Support is given throughout the writing process and constructive feedback is offered in the form of stage-appropriate targets to ensure progress.

I cannot recommend Vivienne highly enough as an English tutor. She supported my dyslexic daughter and non dyslexic son through N5 English and Higher English with patience and skill. She tailored her tutorials to each child’s individual needs and provided the right level of challenge to keep them both on track. With Vivienne’s support, both children achieved excellent results. Vivienne was so kind to the children and they really enjoyed the sessions. I would absolutely recommend her services.

Vivienne has been helping my daughter with National 5 English for around 6 months. Although English is her weakest subject, my daughter enjoys her sessions and appears to have a far better grasp of what is required for the exam. Vivienne is reliable and accommodating, and responds promptly to any issues. She appears engaging with a genuine desire to help. We plan to continue with weekly hour long sessions until the exam.
