About Scott
I didn't get English straight away at school, because I wasn't shown immediately how it can be important to me as an individual or how it matters in my life. I received C at GCSE, but through focused and fun tutoring I attained a first class degree in my Undergraduate degree. My tutor helped me go from a 15 year old who didn't know what a syllable was to a 22 year old working in Publishing and Proofreading for professional academic journals. In my lessons, my aim first and foremost is to show you how fun, entertaining and enjoyable studying English Literature can be. Whether you're here because you need to pass a class, or because you really think this is your jam, I will help you enjoy writing and see how easy it is to create an amazing essay.

Results and skill-building are equally important in my process, as I want my students to continue on a course of academic success. I help students take a well-rounded, interdisciplinary approach to research and writing (Art, Literature, Philosophy). Between my BA, MA and experience as a Research Assistant, I am able to show students how to critically analyse sources in a focused and productive manner, and show them how to translate this content into a well-crafted analysis. I teach from Key Stage 3 to Undergraduate level. I currently tutor a handful of first year English Literature Undergraduates at Royal Holloway, focusing on essay writing and reading skills. A lesson will range from 1-2 hours, with tasks in-between to set up critical discussion. If students cannot find time to complete the tasks, I have a wealth of ready-made activities available to make the most of the time.

Scott’s well-rounded knowledge, encouragement and patience helped my confidence in writing. Results aren’t everything to me, but I’m really pleased that I went from scraping the grades I wanted in my first term at Royal Holloway to finally getting a comfortable first in my poetry class. Scott helped me understand that it was only a few things that were holding my grade back, which really helped my confidence and understanding of academic essay writing. I think what was most exciting was seeing that essay writing was rather quite easy, so long as I put in the time reading and researching effectively. I would recommend Scott to anyone who wants both practical help, and a really big reading list!
When I started my combined honours course at Royal Holloway, I found myself living in two worlds - English and Philosophy. I had a passion for both subjects, but no idea of how to bridge them.
Scott's been a great help with showing just how productive the alliance of literary skill and sound philosophical thought can be.
On the practical side, his suggestions as to how to structure study sessions and format notes has been a great help, and his essay advice is invaluable (and shows results).I highly recommend Scott as an English tutor. Scott is an excellent teacher, who is patient and helped me feel confident in my strengths, and understand what my weaknesses were and how to overcome them. With his help, I managed to finally get the A I wanted, and in turn found a place in my first-choice university. I think what Scott helped most with was defining the simple structure and research skills of writing an essay, and then showing me simple tricks to maintain my concentration (as that was something I really struggled with). I couldn’t recommend him more.
