About Kayla
Hi! My name is Kayla. I am a neurodivergent, transgender woman who puts an emphasis on empathy and kindness above all else. Academically, I am a lifelong passionate scientist and fiction writer, and I am determined to find a way to help anyone love learning, even with the negative experiences many of us have had, or the fraught relationship we may have between academic performance and personal feelings of worth.
I have completed most of my teaching degree and have many hours of experience both as a tutor and as a formal teacher. However, I have elected to focus on tutoring and cultivating individual learners, as I was frustrated with my inability to give any student quite as much attention as they deserved in a full classroom, and felt constricted by the competing demands of public school teaching.
When I'm not educating, I'm reading, playing video games, going for long walks, or working on my fantasy novel. I do my best work helping students who bloom when given enough space to just be themselves. My ultimate goal is to give my students the teacher many of us have never had - one who feels safe to take intellectual risks with, one who can respond to their specific needs, and one who can meet them at their level with empathy and compassion. Learning doesn't have to be scary - let's find a way to make it fun.

I focus on the merits of my students, building up their confidence in a safe environment, engaging their inherent interests, and finding a way to learn that suits the way their mind works. My greatest hope is to help students have a positive relationship with education and learning, something I believe can be difficult for many people with the way school goes.
Lessons are for middle school or high schoolers interested in finding tools to approach school better, assistance in tasks, and those who would benefit from a neurodivergent, queer mentor. Lesson plans will vary greatly based on the needs of the individual.
While my particular expertise is in science, I am well-versed in both creative and analytical writing and math up to and including calculus. While I am quite willing to travel, I would also pose the newly-opened Belmont public library as a fantastic place to meet!
