About Lara
My philosophy stems from many places. Growing up in Nebraska and California, my mother, who walked with Martin Luther King, Jr in Birmingham, Alabama, taught and lived by the belief that everyone has a right to have a good education. Through living this belief, I have a passion to provide all students with a positive opportunity to learn and grow. Other influencers in my philosophy are Gandhi, Erik Erikson, Multi-Sensory Approaches, and Alan Wolfelt. Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” This is the essence of my philosophy not only with education but also life. Showing empathy, understanding, acceptance, and interest builds relationships. Erik Erikson’s human development theory influences student growth and adult interactions: To improve and develop social interactions and acquire basic virtues. Giving learners opportunities to practice positive personal growth by developing social skills is key. Alan Wolfelt’s focus on grief and loss emphasizes presence, empathy, and understanding. Grief and loss have major effects on all people. Alan treats grief as a natural and necessary process which transforms a person's worldview. Grief is not a problem to be solved or a disease to be cured, but a way to connect with each other and develop our own self. All of us deal with grief and loss in some way, for example loss of a dream. Young adults need support to learn how to build companionship (reassuring friendships) and to express themselves outwardly, which is essential for healing and problem solving. Also, when people connect with similar experiences, solutions are obtained to unlock the problem. Once realizing you are not alone with the struggle, transforming through the loss is more manageable and less devastating. Working with all students, I have learned how to develop a variety of communication and behavioral management skills. Finding behavioral patterns will show skill attainment and deficits. This, in turn, will provide a guide for the next step. Solution Focused, Positive Psychology, and Motivational Interviewing are reliable interventions to promote positive change for others and myself. Being able to analyze verbal and non-verbal communication is necessary to keep healthy relationships growing. Differentiating and Student Led: Working with diverse populations, each person has a unique perspective, background, needs, skills, languages, and abilities. Being able to adapt lessons or communication to the needs of each person (disabilities, social-emotional needs, English Language Learners, and diverse skill levels) allows learning to occur. In summary, I seek to continually improve student learning, the environment, and my own growth. Maintaining a flexible, positive, and open mindset, I will discover solutions to unanswered questions.

Do you find yourself stuck in making the same language errors? A Multi-Sensory Approach involves engaging multiple senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, & tactile) simultaneously to enhance comprehension, retention, and application. This method supports the development of new pathways. The goal is to have the information correctly placed in the mind for later retrieval to make connections with new information. Depending on the previously secured skills (determined through assessments), the student will begin learning all components of language. Lessons will continue to build on these secure skills by gradually introducing new skills.
