About Peng
I am a UK-based university lecturer specialising in Finance, Accounting, and Empirical Research Methods. I currently work as a Lecturer in Financial Management at a Russel Group University, and have over 10 years of experience in university-level teaching and academic research. I hold a PhD in Finance and a Master’s degree in Computational Finance, and my research has been published in leading international journals. Alongside teaching, I regularly supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and work closely with students on research design, data analysis, and academic writing. As a tutor, I focus on helping students develop clear understanding, strong analytical skills, and academic confidence, whether they are preparing for exams, struggling with quantitative methods, or working on a dissertation or thesis.

1. My teaching approach and methodology My tutoring approach is concept-driven, structured, and outcome-oriented. Rather than focusing only on solving individual questions, I help students understand the underlying logic, assumptions, and methodology behind finance, accounting, econometrics, and research-based work. I typically follow a three-step structure: Clarify the problem and learning objective We first identify what exactly the student is struggling with — whether it is a theoretical concept, a mathematical derivation, empirical methodology, or academic writing. Build intuition before formal techniques I explain ideas in plain language and real-world terms before introducing formulas, models, or statistical tools. This is particularly effective for finance, accounting, and econometrics. Apply and consolidate We then apply the concepts to: coursework questions empirical papers datasets (e.g. Stata output) dissertation chapters My goal is not short-term memorisation, but long-term understanding and independent thinking. 2. Techniques I use in lessons Depending on the subject, I use: Step-by-step explanation of models and equations Guided walkthroughs of empirical papers Interpretation of regression results and robustness tests Help with research design, hypotheses, and variable construction Clear feedback on academic writing and structure Exam-focused techniques where appropriate (especially for finance and accounting modules) For research methods and dissertations, I place strong emphasis on: “Why this method?” “What assumptions are being made?” “How would an examiner or reviewer evaluate this?” 3. Typical length and format of lessons Typical lesson length: 60 minutes Longer sessions (90 minutes) are recommended for: econometrics research methods dissertation support Lessons can be: One-off problem-solving sessions Short-term exam preparation Ongoing academic support across a term or dissertation period I adapt the pace and depth according to the student’s level and goals. 4. Qualifications and experience I am a Lecturer in Financial Management at the University of Southampton, with over 10 years of university-level teaching and research experience Qualifications: PhD in Finance (Hanken School of Economics, Finland) MSc in Computational Finance (Hanken School of Economics, Finland) BSc Financial Management (Harbin Institute of Technology, China) Extensive publication record in leading international journals Experienced in teaching: Finance Accounting Management Accounting Corporate Governance Portfolio Management I regularly supervise and examine undergraduate and postgraduate, PhD research work, including dissertations. 5. Who my lessons are for My tutoring is suitable for: Undergraduate students Finance Accounting Economics Business and Management Postgraduate students (MSc / MBA) Finance and accounting modules Econometrics and research methods PhD / Doctoral students Research design Empirical methods Dissertation and thesis development Professionals Academic-style research Quantitative analysis Understanding empirical finance papers I particularly enjoy working with students who want to understand “how things work”, not just pass an exam.
