About Jack
Music has been a massive part of my life since I was a child. I inherited a love of film music from my Dad, who introduced me to the sound of orchestral music through film scores.
I grew up playing cornet in brass bands, trumpet in my county orchestra and writing my own music. I progressed through grades at school, and I was a member of Aldeburgh Young Musicians, where I began taking lessons in composition.
When I was 18, I was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London. Four years later I graduated with a First Class degree in composition, and I now work as a freelance composer, orchestrator and sound designer.
While I was at the RCM, I discovered a love of teaching music through the music tuition modules I took there. Throughout the pandemic, I taught online lessons in trumpet and composition, and I have helped students progress in their musical journey by equipping them with knowledge and technique to expand their horizons.
I'd love to help you reach your musical goals! Feel free to schedule a trial lesson and I'd be happy to discuss things with you :)

ONLINE MUSIC THEORY TUITION - UP TO GRADE 5
Maybe you're taking ABRSM exams...or you just want to be able to read music! Whatever your reason, if you're curious about how music works and how it's written down, I'd love to teach you.
-
Music theory has a reputation for being a bit daunting - but don't fear! I believe learning theory can be exciting and fun. A trained composer myself, I am passionate about how music works. I have over a year's experience teaching individual and group classes, and since graduating from the RCM a couple of years ago I now work professionally as a composer and orchestrator.
I will take you through the ABRSM syllabus, a widely acknowledged course which will teach you theory systematically. We will spend time using our ears in addition to pen and paper, and bit by bit I'm sure I can help it 'click'.
METHODOLOGY
We'll start with the basic building blocks of music notation - rhythm and pitch. From here we'll learn about key signatures, scales, chords and musical terms and symbols. You will learn how to read, write and understand written music. You will also have the opportunity to explore how these musical concepts relate to the music you love, through listening and analysing music across a variety of genres.
In my view, you don't need a thorough understanding of music theory to speak the language of music - but it will massively increase the words you have to express yourself. It will open doors of artistic expression for you, improve your playing and I promise you, it's pretty fascinating stuff.
