ENGLISH TUTOR FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS - 2018

• Tutor students in fundamentals of English (writing organization, literature analysis, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics as necessary, each with its own content) tailored to each student’s needs and current skills.

ENGLISH TUTOR FOR JAPANESE STUDENTS – 2018

• Tutor students of all skill levels and ages. (Instruction includes phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatic skills as necessary.) Also teach topical English, including English in the context of travel, business, lifestyle, and informal conversation.

SYOSSET HIGH SCHOOL, Syosset, NY 1994 – 1996

• Wrote more than 400 college recommendations, including many to Ivy-League schools in an extremely competitive district. Reviewed hundreds of personal essays prior to students’ submission to institutions. Staff Liaison for Asian-American Students Association. Co-presented on topics of interest to parents with Guidance administrators and other faculty. Collaborated with parents and staff regarding individual student difficulties.

I have a Master's degree in Education (GPA 3.98), and I was accepted into the Golden Key International Honour Society. I also have a Master's degree in Psychology plus 60 additional credits (GPA 4.00), and a Juris Doctor degree. I graduated within the top one-third of my class and passed the New York State Bar Exam. I have a Bachelor's degree in Political Science (GPA 3.94) and received the following honors: Phi Beta Kappa (junior year), Summa Cum Laude, and Phi Sigma Alpha (Political Science Honor Society).

About the lesson

Hi, I'm Alan. I currently tutor English to more than 20 students monthly, each with unique needs. My skills are tools to help each student reach his or her individual goals.

Learning French in school was difficult for me, so I understand what it can be like to become comfortable learning new academic skills. The best teachers were able to engage me and create an enjoyable, creative, supportive, and relaxed learning experience.

While a lesson plan should include foundations of English (writing organization, literature analysis, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics as necessary, each with its own content), it should also tailored to each student's particular learning style and interests.

I combine my tutoring experience with my master's in education and my master's in psychology (both with highest honors) to bring this learning environment to each student during every lesson. I work from each student's strengths and I'm enthusiastic and patient. My goal is to make everything we cover understandable. I encourage questions; no question is too simple, and questions help me create future lessons. I welcome suggestions from parents and students. I also make sure that each student fully masters the lesson material, and I sometimes extend the lesson for a few minutes to ensure that students are completely comfortable with parts of a lesson that were especially difficult, or for extra practice. I am retired from law now, and tutoring continues to be a wonderful experience. I include a second free hour after the first free lesson so I can set aside time to more thoroughly understand each student's best learning style. I am easy to reach and respond very quickly.
