About Jonah
Hello, I'm Jonah! I've recently finished my education journey as a student, and having practiced for two years as a professional instructor, I'd love to continue my education journey as an instructor.
In terms of my experience as a teacher, I spent six straight years doing post-secondary education. I received my Bachelor of Humanities degree and my Master of Political Economy degree at Carleton University. During my MA I worked as a Teacher's Assistant, which means I graded students' work, delivered lectures and held meetings with them to help them improve. My master's thesis is about the philosophy of technology, and the social and political impacts of social media. I've also worked professionally as a researcher for a non-government organization, and I am a published author!
When it comes to my hobbies and interests, I love playing video games, building computers, reading books and working on cars. I also very much enjoy learning - about everything! Though I learned about a wide variety of subjects throughout school, I found political philosophy to be the most interesting to me.
I believe that regardless of how boring a subject may appear at first glance, a good instructor knows how to make it interesting. I look forward to demonstrating this!

My approach & methodologies as a tutor are guided by three main principles:
1. Open Communication: Students have a right to be participants in, and contributors to, the process of their own education. Parent(s) have an important role to play as well.
2. Dynamism: No student is the same, and as such lesson plans and teaching methods need to be able to change accordingly.
3. Dialectical Learning: Across all subjects, learning is made fun and easy through dialogue and active learning - questions and conversation are encouraged and rewarded.
An example of a typical lesson plan is as follows (It should be noted that lesson plans are highly dynamic and can change entirely depending on the student's needs and the parent(s)' s concerns or requests):
- Assigned material that students are to read/study.
- Lecture-like segment where the subject matter is reviewed together with the student.
- Conversation/discussion period on the subject matter; questions, observations, reflections, active learning.
- Occasional, ungraded quizzes to test retention.
So, what sets me apart from other instructors?
1. My lessons can be adjusted for just about any age group or class level. Additionally, my lessons are dynamic and modular, and I am thus able to teach the same subject matter across many class levels, while working closely with parent(s) to ensure their goals are met.
2. My education has given me a robust general knowledge of the humanities and social sciences, so each lesson will include, when necessary, important context, regardless of the topic.
3. Six years as a student and two years as a professional grader/instructor means I am able to teach and strengthen the 'soft' skills necessary for students to apply their knowledge (writing, communication, time management).
4. I have been trained to break down complex, multifaceted principles and convey them in an easily digestible way. My application of dialectical learning is fundamental in this process - by applying this method, I can make even the most complicated topic interesting and fun to learn about.
