About James

I have always had a genuine passion for English and History, finding both subjects fascinating from a young age. I grew up reading widely and became particularly interested in how ideas are formed, structured, and argued—an interest that led me to excel in essay-based subjects throughout my studies.

I am currently working in corporate law, where strong communication, clear writing, and structured thinking are essential. The skills I developed through studying English, History, and related subjects have been directly transferable and highly valuable in my professional life. At the same time, I find myself missing the academic engagement these subjects offer, particularly the close analysis and critical thinking involved in essay writing.

Tutoring allows me to reconnect with that academic interest while helping students develop the same skills that have benefited me so significantly. In particular, I focus on essay structure, analysis, and interpretation—the core elements that often separate good answers from top-grade work.

I aim to be a friendly and supportive mentor to students. I understand that school and exam environments can often feel intimidating, and I hope to bridge that gap by creating a relaxed and encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence at their own pace.

My goal is not only to help students improve their grades, but also to develop strong communication and writing skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom, in further study, university, and their future careers.

About the lesson

My history tutoring lessons focus on helping students understand how to turn knowledge into high-grade exam answers. Success in history is not just about remembering facts, but about building clear arguments, analysing sources, and writing with structure and precision.

In each lesson, we work on key exam skills such as essay planning, developing strong analytical paragraphs, and improving source interpretation. I break down what examiners are looking for and show students how to consistently reach higher band answers.

Lessons are one hour long and structured around active practice. This usually includes working through past paper questions, improving written responses, and targeting specific areas for improvement such as argument development or evaluation.

I teach GCSE and A-Level History students, and tailor each session to the student’s current level and exam board. My aim is to help students gain confidence in their writing, deepen their understanding of historical topics, and improve their exam performance through clear, structured guidance.
