About Alicia

Have you ever watched the hit Netflix series, Lupin? Or maybe you have listened to Celine Dion's iconic "My Heart Will Go On"? If not, most certainly, you know of arguably the greatest futbol (more than likely you call it soccer where you reside) player right now, Kylian Mbappe? Come learn the language that these megastars speak. After all, it is only the sixth most spoken language in the world.

Hey, everyone! My name is Alicia McGlory, a recent Emory University graduate, and now, a Superprof tutor seeking to empower students to speak French.

My approach as a tutor follows the 4 C's technique: Clever, Creative, Current, and Customized. I focus on immersion and communication to engage students in mastering the French language. This takes time and genuine interest in the language. I have the time and expertise, so I just need my students to bring the desire to learn.

Together, we'll explore the language, the culture, and the world of French. Through role-playing real-world scenarios, employing active recall, and implementing memory tricks and mnemonics, I build lessons that are memorable and enjoyable for students.

Background: I'm a recent college graduate (yes, I just graduated in May of this year). I remember what it feels like to struggle with French tenses and moods, freeze mid-conversation, and have my mind go blank, coincidentally at the start of an exam. But my college-level courses are but a smaller chunk of my ten years learning the language as a non-native speaker. I remember struggling to build a strong foundation, studying diligently to become an intermediate learner, and rejoicing when I finally reached an advanced status.

When I finally did, I jumped at the closest opportunity to practice - studying abroad in Paris. I was nervous, hesitant, and a bit scared to operate the Paris métro, but determination pushed me through. I learned how to live in Paris, how French is actually spoken, the slang, and the cultural habits that textbooks simply couldn't teach.

This time, I seek to do that for others, turning those real-world lessons into sessions. My International Studies background adds to this global perspective, so my teaching becomes more than just a school subject, but a session that encapsulates the living language that spans continents and cultures.

If you are a student - elementary to college - I am prepared to help you master French. Get your French brain ready, and prepare to have fun!

My approach as a tutor follows the 4 C's technique: Clever, Creative, Current, and Customized to each student so they feel empowered to master the French language.

- My teaching method is centered around immersion, real communication, and engaging students through lessons that explore cultural components that they enjoy (music, tv/film, sports, games, etc). Through role-playing real-world scenarios (i.e. ordering at a café), employing active recall, and implementing memory tricks and mnemonics, I build lessons that are memorable and enjoyable for students.

- My lesson plans follow a fixed and flexible structure, depending on each individual student's needs. The usual lesson plan goes as:
- Warm-up/ "Quoi de neuf" (5-10 min) that starts with casual conversation to wake up students' French brain and provides me with a live update of their progress.
- Focus skill (15-20 min) that emphasizes a concrete goal. This is the "lesson" part; where vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are built, sharpened, and mastered. Instead of long lectures, I use examples through visual aids and memory hooks to help the student retain the information better.
- Immersion time (15-20 min) is the creative core of our session. Learning comes alive here! We'll play vocabulary games, watch French videos, discuss short articles, practice presentation skills, and role play everyday scenarios.
- Feedback and recap (5-10 min) is when I will review mistakes, highlight wins, and emphasize key takeaways for the session.
- Take-home (optional) are short, low-pressure tasks. They can include listening to popular French music, watching French TV, recording voice memos in French, and more!

- Being a recent college graduate is what sets me apart as a tutor. I was a French student not long ago, so I remember exactly what it feels like to struggle with French tenses and moods, freeze mid-conversation, and have my mind go blank, coincidentally at the start of an exam. I haven't forgotten the obstacles and I vividly recall what improved my French. Additionally, I have been learning French for over ten years as a non-native speaker. I remember being a beginner and building a strong foundation, becoming an intermediate learner and breaking through plateaus, and reaching an advanced status and polishing nuance. This time, I seek to do that for others, helping them realize their French language goals. After all, it is the sixth most spoken language in the world and you'd expand your reach by hundreds of millions.

- The lessons are for a variety of students.
- If an elementary and middle school, I will work on building a fun, confident foundation.
- If a high school student, I will work on strengthening speaking skills and exam prep.
- If a college student, I will work on helping the student polish their fluency, prepare for increasingly difficult coursework, study abroad, or career goals.
