About the lesson

It is my mission as a teacher to help you cultivate creativity and develop musical techniques that allow you to play whatever music you desire.

Our lessons are fun and customized to your goals! Every student has their unique strengths and areas of improvement in music, whether it is sight reading, aural skills, sensitivity for the tone of the music, rhythm, etc. Through our lessons and providing tools/strategies for you to practice and learn effectively, I will help to bring out the strengths in a student’s musical learning journey.

For younger children, we do a lot of "off the bench" activities to keep them engaged. We play games to strengthen their note reading and theory knowledge! With a background in child psychology and being certified to teach the RCM Smartstart program, a play-based music class for 0-6 years old, young students love being involved and moving during lessons. Parents are encouraged to be involved in their lessons if it helps them practice throughout the week.
For adults, I understand that time can be limited! I provide lots of tools to effective practice and keep the concepts easy to understand. Whether you have 10 minutes to practice or just have piano time at our lessons, you'll always be propelling forward as you learn piano.

- Teaching classical or contemporary music to students of all levels of all ages

Perfect! Background: I'm an adult in my 30s, and I was looking to learn music for the first time. I had never played piano, or any other instrument growing up, and I didn't know where to start.

Purpose: A good friend of mine recommended I get a teacher—a teacher who can ensure that I do NOT build bad habits or patterns. As an adult learner, I was seeking someone who could help me learn music properly. Kids and adults learn very differently, so I needed a teacher who could understand the difference between the two and adapt their teaching styles and expectations.

Luckily, I found Winnie.

My Experience:
I've been learning from Winnie for the past 3 months. She is professional, encouraging, and highly knowledgeable.

Winnie is not only a master of her craft and an excellent educator but also a kind human being!

I visit her once a week for 30 minutes. She is generous in answering questions, responds quickly to texts if I have questions, and also provides lots of encouragement and highlights areas for improvement.

I have learned a lot more because of her than I would otherwise.

A few accomplishments I attribute to having a teacher like Winnie:
1. I can read sheet music (otherwise, I would not have even tried!).
2. I can play several songs now (she has helped me learn about 1 song per week).
3. I learned how to practice piano efficiently and save myself time.

When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Surprisingly, it took me awhile before I realized I enjoyed piano! This may be relatable to some students but my parents chose this activity for me and I only began to fall in love with music and piano when I had enough knowledge to play songs I enjoyed! This was about two to three years into my studies.
What makes you passionate about your subject?
Playing the piano will always be a passion and a lifelong journey for me. The beautiful sound of the instrument, the different emotions portrayed in pieces, the way I can share my music with others. It will be the one thing that I wish to spend my whole life doing… and at the core of it all, I enjoy bringing out my student's curiosity about music and watch them discover all that it has to offer.
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
I believe that we begin learning at birth and we never stop. There's so many new students entering the world of piano music who do not know how incredible they can be. Through the initial learning curve, to students bringing in music they enjoy, to being proud of a piece they complete - I want to be a guide to help them through the growth journey and celebrate their successes.
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
I am eternally grateful for my teachers who have paved the way for me. One taught me the perseverance to overcome and be courageous on the piano, another showed me the beauty of world music and jazz, and the last helped me rediscover my passion for music.
What are your keys to success?
For the young children - the success team is teacher, parent support and their practicing.
Being coachable is also an important part. We may not always understand a teacher's guidance, however we need to trust them and the process. It is a student's job to follow through on the guidance which will lead to success.
