Learn more about Rajajeyakumar

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

I specialize in neurophysiology, physiology, and medical education, fields that intricately connect human biology with teaching and research. My fascination began during my MD studies at JIPMER, where I delved into the complex interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems. Over time, my interest expanded through research in areas like yoga, lifestyle medicine, and neurovascular physiology, with a focus on integrating traditional and contemporary approaches to healthcare.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach, and why?

Teaching is my way of using knowledge to create meaningful change. Inspired by the guidance and dedication of my mentors at JIPMER, I strive to adopt a teaching approach that fosters critical thinking alongside empathy. For me, teaching is not merely a profession but a vital role in shaping future healthcare professionals who are grounded in ethics, evidence-based practice, and a passion for continuous learning.
  • How does your work help society?

My work impacts society by advancing the understanding of physiology, promoting preventive health measures through lifestyle medicine, and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers. For instance, my studies on the effects of pranayama on cardiovascular health and stress offer practical strategies for managing non-communicable diseases. Additionally, my contributions as a teacher and editor ensure that medical students are well-prepared to tackle pressing global health issues.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of and why?

I look up to Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a physician and educator who seamlessly combined clinical practice with humanitarian efforts. His unwavering commitment to serving underserved communities while advancing medical knowledge aligns closely with my own aspirations of blending education, research, and service to society.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Beyond teaching, I enjoy practicing yoga and pranayama, which resonate with my research interests. I am also passionate about traveling, which broadens my horizons, and writing, especially on topics that merge medicine, lifestyle, and education.
  • Do you have an anecdote to share about your student or professional life?

During a workshop on systematic reviews and meta-analysis, one participant initially expressed self-doubt about their research abilities. By the end of the session, they confidently developed a research proposal and eventually published their findings. Experiences like these reinforce my belief in the transformative power of mentorship and education.
