About Danilo
Originally from Costa Rica, in my professional and academic experience I have had the opportunity to work in the planning, development, application, and analysis of surveys, focus groups, and in-depth interviews.
As Research Assistant at the Omar Dengo Foundation I was tasked with evaluating the communitarian and macro-social impact of the national educational informatics program in Costa Rica, as such, I conducted several interviews as well as their subsequent analysis, in order to approximate a result.
As consultant for the Inter American Institute of Human Rights, I was responsible for the planning and execution of various conferences, campaigns and training projects for the Central American Council of Ombudsman Offices, in a variety of subject matters (HIV+, children, migrants, women, people with disabilities, and so on).
As a lecturer at the University of Costa Rica, I have had the opportunity to work with students from different areas and disciplines, engaging and motivating them while developing their critical thinking abilities. I have taught the following modules: Basic Sociology I and II; Sociology of Communication; Introduction to Sociology of Communication; Introduction to Sociology for Psychology; Sociology of Health; Anglo-American Sociology; and Integrated Research Workshops I and II, for the Sociology Department. As well as Research Methodology I and II for the Library and Information Sciences Department; and the Research Workshops I and II for the Public Health Department. I also had the opportunity to co-impart an introductory course on qualitative research methods, open to all the faculty of the University, twice. I was also a member of the ‘Final Graduation Works Committee’ from the Library and Information Sciences Department, for over two years. I was also a member of the organizing committee of the XXX Congress of the Latin American Sociological Association, held in 2015, in Costa Rica, as well as National Coordinator for its Workgroup number 3: ‘Production, cultural consumption and media’.
Finally, my M.A. dissertation in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology from Leiden University delved into the creation process of advertising at a Costa Rican Ad-Agency; through an ethnographic approach (three months of interviewing and embedded observation) I examined the connections of images and symbols that travel the world, and how they are reinterpreted and reproduced; as well as how the corporate culture of the agency limits and moulds such use. My M.A. dissertation on Social Media and Social Research from the University of York looked into the concept of civility in online conversations, moving away from criteria based on the rationality of arguments, while paying attention to epistemic issues regarding the support and evaluation of information, as well as the characterisation of other people’s epistemic capacities.I am currently a second year PhD candidate at the School of Media and Communication from the University of Leeds.

I take a very personalized approach; each research project is unique, and every researcher has their own ways of tackling the process. My aim is to help the student find the best ways for them to work, while clarifying the different phases of research, how to gather data, the role of theory, and the possible ways of writing a report.
