Within my teaching, I actively promote Carol Dwecks' Growth Mindset' and encourage children to recognise that achievement is the product of effort and learning. Children need to know that they can grow their brains. I ensure that process praise is a key feature in the classroom, praising for persistence, effort and resilience rather than the person. I encourage a culture where mistakes are celebrated and recognised as improving learning and intelligence; I model that everyone makes mistakes, and they are not negative. It has been found that adopting this approach and encouraging a growth-mindset consistently has high levels of impact on progress and is particularly effective for low achieving pupils.
I specialise in teaching English as it is a particular passion of mine. English can be a powerful tool as it can help to provide children with a step up in life. My hopes and aspirations as a future English teacher are to inspire a love for the subject. English is a part of everything in life so, in the eyes of a child, it can become a taxing activity. However, in the classroom I want English to be looked forward to.
All learning begins from children’s own experiences, therefore I try to make my lessons as ‘hands on’ as possible. I endeavour to help plan and deliver interactive, exciting, and cross-curricular lessons whilst considering individual needs and different learning styles, ensuring they are accessible and enriching to all. I enjoy using hooks in the classroom that are tailored to the children’s interests and topic. Children should be given the opportunity to make their own choice about their learning, therefore I support each child to inquire, investigate and discover through stimulating topics.
My lessons normally last an hour and the age range is between 4-11. I have lots of experience teaching in school settings and a nursery. Furthermore for 3 months after graduating I did my own private tutoring where I tutored 5 students ranging from the ages 4-11.
