About Hélène

I am a qualified teacher in France, having passed the national teaching exam (agrégation) and taught in secondary school (lycée) in the Greater Paris region as well as in schools in Cambridge.
I have over 10 years' private tutoring experience with a wide range of age groups (children, teenagers, adults). I am also a published translator of art books. I hold a PhD in american studies and MFL, and have also taught literature, grammar and translation at the University of Paris-Nanterre. I hold a BA and an MA from the University of Paris-Diderot. I am very keen on foreign languages, as they are for sharing and help nurture one's curiosity. Being currently in the process of learning Spanish and the Lebanese dialect of Arabic from scratch, I am fully aware of the challenges faced by beginners and also advanced learners who want to go the extra mile. I come from the Southern region of France, grew up near Paris and spent some time in New Caledonia. I love listening to people's travel stories.

About the lesson

I’ve designed a progressive learning path that is both structured and fun, keeping you engaged while making you an active participant. You’ll never leave a lesson without having spoken.
You can also opt for 45 min-lessons.

Homework is included but optional.
You can also choose whether or not to be assessed.

My lessons offer GCSE/ALEVEL students a different way to experience French, through engaging sessions that spark their interest and help them make space for foreign languages in their lives — with the hope that they will make the French language their own both for and beyond the exam.

My teaching is always guided by the following principles:
- Sharing my love of foreign languages with others in a spirit of cooperation, encouragement, open-mindedness and joy.
- Adapting the material to the age, experience and interests of the student
- Making sure the guidelines & requirements of the exams are clear and well understood by the students
- Regular exposure to French and francophone cultures through authentic, varied resources (film, newspapers, music, art, literature, etc)
- Developing spoken fluency, accurate writing skills and grammatical awareness
- Making sure our classes are as immersive as possible- by hearing French regularly, you'll be surprised to find out you understand what I'm saying without me ever having explained certain words!

I also work with students to design a personalised programme of study that will enable them to achieve their goals in French:
- GCSE/A-Level/ IB
- Conversation
- French for business (how to write a CV and a cover letter, apply for a job in a French-speaking country, hold a meeting, communicate through e-mail and in-person, understand varieties of French spoken internationally, translate documents)
- academic (developing skills up to university standards, academic writing in French, preparation for DELF/DALF exams required to study in French-speaking countries, literature and history in French)
- just for fun, to acquire everyday life French or to be able to speak with family members and friends.

I'm also open to your suggestions as to how you'd like to be taught if you know in advance how you'd like to proceed. For example, I have a student who feels more comfortable with a very practical approach, ie. she picks it up from me as we do everyday tasks together in French. I also have experience with students with special needs.
