About Rosemary

I completed a Bachelor of Business Science degree with Honours in Economics in 2001, and in 2006 I completed my Master of Business Science degree in Economics.

My love of teaching began whilst I was at UCT. I was actively involved with the tutoring of undergraduate and postgraduate Economics students for over 6 years, and was the Head Tutor for the Honours Econometrics module for five years. I also assisted with the marking of tests, exams and projects. Having completed my Masters Degree, I worked as an Economist for a number of years doing academic research and also doing economics consulting work.

In 2012 I decided to take a break from my career in Economics, in part because I had grown disillusioned that my work did not seem to be having a real impact on people’s lives. After much introspection, and recalling what satisfaction I got from tutoring students at UCT all those years ago, I decided my calling was to become a high school Mathematics and Economics teacher. So, I registered for a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) at UCT in order to get the necessary qualifications to be a teacher.

During my teaching qualification I specialised in teaching Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, and Economics to high school learners. I received a distinction for my teaching practicals, and was rated within the top 5% of students by my supervisors. I have worked in both public and private schools, which means I have a thorough knowledge of the requirements for NSC, IEB and Cambridge AS and A-levels.

I have always been a patient, caring and compassionate educator who takes a great interest in her learners' progress and in their mastery of the subject. My enthusiasm for teaching both Mathematics and Economics and my ability to explain difficult concepts translates into a sense of capability and more positive outlook towards these subjects in my learners. My greatest sense of achievement comes from helping learners who are struggling with a subject, building their confidence, understanding and technique in the subject, and then watching them excel.

My instructional strategy and educational philosophy are based on a “Mastery-Based Learning” approach to teaching and learning. This means that I devote as much time to a topic as necessary in order for a student to fully master that concept before moving on to the next stage. Mastery is how students achieve A’s for their subjects. If a student does not initially achieve mastery on a topic, then I give them additional support in learning and reviewing the information again (perhaps using a different approach or explanations and examples).

It is important for me to observe HOW my students go about approaching problems in Mathematics and Economics, in order for me to fully understand where their conceptual or procedural difficulties lie. My lessons involve a lot of two-way discussion about how a learner is approaching the problem, and I encourage questions as this leads to a greater understanding of the subject. Of course, if time is short, I ensure that I prioritise the most relevant topics for the examination and carefully plan out the most productive use of our lesson time.

I monitor my students’ progress meticulously, and adapt our lesson progression according to their specific learning needs. I am always available outside of lesson hours for questions my learners may have.

More Details About Mastery Based Learning:

The Mastery-Based Learning strategy is based on the belief that most students can achieve a high level of learning capability if the following conditions are available:
• instruction is approached sensitively and systematically and the presentation, explanation, and ordering of elements of the task to be learned is tailored to fit the learning style and needs of the specific learner. This requires teachers to modify their instruction and teaching aids to fit the needs of different students
• students are helped when and where they have learning difficulties
• students are given sufficient time to achieve mastery
• there is some clear criterion of what constitutes mastery

In Mastery-Based Learning, there is a shift in responsibilities, so that student's failure is more due to the instruction and not necessarily lack of ability on his or her part. Therefore, in a Mastery-Based Learning environment, the challenge becomes providing enough time and employing instructional strategies so that ALL students can achieve the same level of learning.

A good teacher tries to find the quality of learning best fit to an individual student, thus the majority of students will be able to master a subject if they have access to a good teacher who correctly employs Mastery-Based Learning techniques.
