About Jakaila
Greetings! I am an educator, tutor, curriculum developer, and published author with over six years of experience teaching the art and science of writing and ELA. I graduated with a B.S. in History in 2019, furthering my education to learn curriculum design, community-participatory research, and facilitation as a post-grad scholar and UCLA fellow. I published a poetry book in 2021 entitled Metamorphosis, and have hosted workshops, classes, and mastermind collectives around writing, entrepreneurship, leadership, and socio-emotional wellness for youth and adults. Special education student turned teacher, I am living proof of the transformative power of written and spoken word.

Values: Integrity, compassion, patience, and courage. We explore the landscape of ELA, storytelling, speech, and how to find your unique voice to shine as a writer and human being.
Approach: We utilize poems, short stories, essay excerpts, videos, and multi-media formats from texts by people of the global majority to contextualize ELA through a contemporary, critical thinking and humanistic perspective.
Alignment: Beyond tutoring, I curate educational spaces where students are empowered to ask questions, participate in their own learning, discuss real-world applications, and engage in solution space about how to apply concepts beyond the classroom. Content is suitable for those in 6-12 grade, and all lessons are special-education friendly.
Lesson Plan Sample:
Topic: Thesis statements
Objective: Creating a central idea and focus point to shape one's body of writing.
Video & Model: Watch a short clip about thesis statements, view examples, and listen to a song that includes a pneumonic device.
Activity: Using the content bank, pick a topic and free-write for 5-10 minutes:
Dissection: Annotate the text with D for detail, S for setting, C for context. Write a sentence to tie all your ideas together into a cohesive paragraph.
Video & Model: Watch a short clip about the role of an outline, and engage the instructor through examples as we make an outline as a class.
Homework: Using your thesis statement from our in-class work, draft an outline of an essay for next week's class.
