About Luke
Hello, my name is Luke, and I am a keen educator of mathematics and psychology!
With over four years in education, I have worked in secondary schools around Sussex as a tutor, teaching assistant, and class teacher where I saw improvements in student confidence and engagement as well as improved mock results compared to projected progress before intervention through class teaching, intervention sessions, and extra-curricular provision. I am comfortable and experienced in providing support one-to-one, to small groups, and to large groups.
Academically, I achieved an upper second-class (2:1) BSc in Psychology from the University of Sussex, where I learnt a variety of key aspects relevant to teaching: child development, educational psychology, learning methods, attention, neurodiversity, etc.
I love to teach all aspects of psychology, although I specialise in research methods and social psychology having conducted research into sample-size planning in psychology and having presented a 2-hour social psychology panel to a local convention.
I have since completed a Maths Subject Knowledge Enhancement course with the University of Sussex to prepare for teacher training as a maths teacher, which is currently partially completed. I also achieved As in Mathematics and Psychology at A-Level and a B in A-Level Geography.
I teach because of the immense fulfilment and importance of student growth: in academics, in confidence, and in identity. No subject makes this importance clearer than psychology. You can expect a respectful, professional student-tutor relationship focused on reflection and student growth. I have recently had an enhanced DBS check and am fully trained for safeguarding in schools and am committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students.

Across four years as an educator, I have come to view my role as a tutor as a humanistic one. Students thrive when their individuality and independence are respected and celebrated while providing the practical and cognitive tools to target their efforts effectively.
Over a one-hour lesson, I start by reviewing recent learning and providing a prior-learning check which will guide the main content of the lesson. After this, the main content will be introduced or reviewed. This content is adapted to students' interests and aims to be applicable to the real world where possible. After introducing content, I reduce my amount of input to match students' pace and needs before providing independent practice and moving on to problem-solving and critical evaluation practice.
In assessing progress through the lesson, I primarily use mini-whiteboards (or interactive whiteboards if online) to create a dyadic, interactive lesson with plenty of practice and feedback. My aim is to teach for crystallised, adaptable understanding rather than rote memorisation, unless requested otherwise. Lastly, students complete a brief reflection on learning and a practice question to track progress across lessons.
All of the above varies by age and individual needs. SEND requirements will be discussed per individual and implemented accordingly. Lessons are best suited for students aged 11-16 for maths or 13+ for psychology and are open to students of all prior abilities. I am also open to adapting support to undergraduate primary maths students or undergraduate psychology students.
