Provide student in Palmerston North tutoring on chemistry and biochemistry to the level in University.

Methodology

I have teaching experience in the university (see mu CV). I taught analytical chemistry lecture and practice courses. I can identify the problems from individual student, then provide clear explanation and guidance. My research background widen my knowledge on molecular biology, microbiology and usage of laboratory equipment beside analytical chemistry and biochemistry.

Experience

I graduated from Nankai University, Tianjin, China in 2000. My highest qualification being a PhD in Biochemistry. Nankai University is one of the most reputable Universities in China. I had been working in AgResearch as a scientist during 2001 to 2016, and my research focused on analytical chemistry, biochemistry and electrophysiology. Now I am a Senior Associate Experts at Real World Education, in Palmerston North. My role is guiding the student on their chemistry study.

In my past twenty years of research career I have gained a lot hands on experience and skills that enable me to work competently in both a research or routine sample analysis and testing laboratory.

Interests

As a scientist of the laboratory team, I supervised post-graduate students and taught technical aspects of laboratory science. I thoroughly enjoyed my teaching role and have a strong interest in mentoring young researchers.

Outside of work, I enjoy taking traditional Chinese cuisine and finding healthier methods of cooking for my friends and family. I am currently developing gluten free dumplings for a coeliac member of the family. I also have an interest in modern Chinese literature and its philosophical base of maintaining perspective in a fast-changing society.

Research

Research in AgResearch

Development of Ion Channel - Bilayer Lipid Membrane Biosensor
Biosensors are crucial for detecting and measuring substances important in health, food safety, pharmaceutical discovery and environmental protection. I successfully developed the sodium and potassium ion channel biosensors using modern molecular biology, protein biochemistry, electrophysiology and BLM techniques. Results have been published as a research article in Biosensors and Bioelectronics, a book chapter and abstracts in international conference proceedings (see publication).

Enzyme assay development for screening the inhibitors of methanogens
I worked in Animal Nutrition / Rumen Microbiology team of AgResearch from July 2010 to June 2016. My main tasks are developing enzyme assays for the screening of ruminant methanogen inhibitors in order to reduce methane emission from dairy cows. I developed several enzyme assays for high throughput screening of inhibitor libraries using a robot, then tested the inhibition using rumen fluid and anaerobic chamber. Two research papers have been published. During this period, I also expressed and purified proteins for the enzymes assay development.

Postdoctoral and PhD
I worked on bilayer lipid membranes and supramolecular assembly nano-technology. I developed biosensors based on BLMs including DNA biosensor, horseradish peroxidase biosensor, pyronarine and cyclophosphamide pharmaceutical biosensors. The bioelectrochemical behaviors of cytochrome C and hemin were also investigated using BLMs modified with several functional materials. The relevant research results were recognized by publishing 7 articles in international journals and 3 articles in national journals.

Lab Techniques
I am proficient in the following techniques:
• Analytical chemistry
• Gas and liquid chromatography
• Can use and develop robotic programs
• Molecular biology and protein biochemistry
• Using anaerobic chamber

Publications and patents
• A substantial proportion of my AgResearch work is confidential and commercially sensitive and therefore was not published in peer reviewed journals
