About Hayley
I have 19 years experience as a daily/long-term substitute teacher and English tutor. I have worked with grades K-8, high school, and college level students in English Language Arts, Literature, and Composition. I have my own brief yet very effective technique for teaching the writing process that boosted my student’s understanding of the exercise and successfully helped these students find their voices in writing with something they could totally relate to.

Here’s an example of a lesson plan for a third grade writing exercise that captured the student’s attention quite quickly. This assignment involved an Oreo cookie that the children were asked to write a few descriptive paragraphs about. I placed an Oreo cookie, on a napkin, on every student’s desk, along with a piece of writing paper and a pencil.
I asked them to describe the Oreo cookie using three of their senses; vision, smell, and taste! I asked them to describe what it looks like? What does it smell like? And finally, the best part, what does it taste like? I asked the students to write at least two sentences for each sense. This writing exercise was a huge hit with my third grade class and it can certainly be easily adapted for any grade level.
Some of the best writing of the year came from this writing exercise. The students were able to use these particular writing process tips and turn it into a rough draft and eventually into a beautiful piece of polished writing.
