About Joseph

I believe learning music enriches life in far more ways than just performance. It supports confidence, creativity, emotional awareness, and connection with others, and can stay with someone long after lessons end. There is growing neuroscientific evidence that learning music strengthens connectivity in the brain.

Growing up, I experienced both unhelpful and truly inspiring music teachers. The best of them became important figures in my life, showing me how powerful learning can be when it feels supportive, engaging, and human. That’s why I care deeply about how music is taught. With the right approach, learning an instrument can be transformative.

Alongside over a decade of professional music teaching and performance, I am a registered psychotherapist with postgraduate training in psychodynamic and developmental psychology. This gives me a sophisticated understanding of how children and adults learn, regulate emotion, build confidence, and sustain motivation over time.

I specialise in working with students who benefit from a thoughtful, developmentally informed approach, including those with ASD, ADHD, sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or low confidence. My aim is not simply to teach an instrument, but to create the conditions in which learning feels safe, engaging, and genuinely transformative.

About the lesson

Lessons are structured, developmentally attuned, and carefully paced to support confidence, attention, and sustained progress. I work relationally, adapting the lesson dynamically in response to the student’s emotional state, learning style, and cognitive profile.

For neurodivergent students or those with additional needs, this may include:
sensory-aware pacing
regulation-focused warm-ups
clear structure combined with flexibility
creative engagement to support attention and motivation

Music theory, technique, and repertoire are integrated in a way that supports understanding rather than rote learning. Students develop not only technical skill, but musical thinking, self-trust, and expressive freedom.

This approach is particularly effective for:

students who have struggled with traditional teaching
highly sensitive or anxious learners
SEN / SEND students
high-potential students needing depth and challenge
